Page 31 of The Act of Trusting

Bypassing ringing the doorbell, Emree opens the door as if she has done it a million times. Trying not to be bad guests, we picked up some ice and a variety of chips at the grocery store on the way. Conrad greets us in the kitchen and takes the ice from Emree, wrapping his free arm around her waist and pulling her in for a kiss.

“How’d you know we were out of ice?” he asks against her lips.

She smiles. “Never been to a party where they didn’t run out.”

He kisses her once more before grabbing her hand and dragging her outside. She drops her overnight bag on the couch on the way out.

Alone in the kitchen, I go in search of some bowls for the chips we bought. Coming up empty after closing the third cabinet, I hear the sliding door behind me open. As I turn to ask whoever came in where I can find some bowls, a body encloses behind me and I freeze, unable to breathe or move. Before I go into full panic attack mode, the familiar scent of spice and sunscreen that has invaded my senses the last couple weeks is there. My body relaxes knowing it’s Camden behind me and he wouldn’t do anything against my will.

“I missed you, baby,” he whispers. His breath tickles my ear. As he pushes my long hair aside, he places a kiss on my neck.

I sink into him, loving the feel of the sweetest man I have ever met wanting me. “I saw you a few days ago.”

He’s placing wet kisses along my neck, and I tilt to the right, giving him more access. His hands glide along my waist, resting against my stomach.

“Too long without seeing you,” he says against my skin. Camden turns me around so that I’m facing him, my back pressing into the counter. “This okay?” he asks, his lips a hair’s length away from touching mine. I nod, a little too fast, and my lips brush against his.

He grips my waist, bringing his body flush against mine as he crashes our lips together. I sigh at the contact, having missed him as much as he missed me. My hands have a mind of their own as they make their way up his forearms, his biceps, resting on either side of his face. I brush my thumbs along the stubble of his jaw and he moans, amplifying the kiss.

Camden’s tongue runs along the seam of my lips, asking for access and I grant it to him, opening to allow his tongue inside. It mingles with mine and I taste the faint hint of beer and mint on him. My hands move to his hair, threading the wavy strands between my fingers, pulling him tighter against me. Wanting him closer, I bite his lip in frustration.

“Fuck,” Camden groans against my lips, breaking our kiss.

Gripping my waist, Camden lifts me and the next thing I know, my butt meets the countertop. He scoots me forward, my center molding to his front. The contact is foreign to me, but I welcome it. His lips part from mine and begin their descent, gliding across my cheek, my jaw, and landing on the base of my throat. I lean my head back against the cabinet, giving him more access.

A featherlight touch ghosts along my hips, under my shirt, and moves up and up to land on my ribs, just below my breasts. Camden’s lips on my neck stop their exploring and he pulls his hands away from my body. He doesn’t step back but leans far enough away to look into my eyes.

“Hey, what happened there?” he asks me. There is worry in his eyes and it’s hard for me to keep his gaze.

I hadn’t even noticed, but my hands are balled into fists at my sides and my body is frozen. “I-I’m sorry.” Ducking my head, I avoid looking into his eyes. “I think it just became too much for me.”

A soft touch is at my chin, lifting my head up to meet his eyes. “We kind of got carried away there, huh?” He smiles, and it is so sweet and beautiful that it helps me unclench my fists and relax. “I told you we’re going at your pace, remember? Anything that becomes too much, you let me know. My feelings aren’t hurt.”

“I’m sure you’re used to girls who are ready and sleep with you right away.” The thought of Camden with other women makes my stomach tighten, but I try not to let it show on my face.

He runs his fingers along my jaw. “I’m not going to lie to you. Yes, I’ve been with other women and yes, most of them aren’t the type to take it slow.” Bile begins to rise hearing him admit it. “But, Blaire, I’ve never wanted to go slow with a girl before. I don’t know what it is about you, but from the moment I saw you in my backyard at that party, I haven’t been able to get you off my mind. There’s something here, baby, and I’m more than happy waiting for you to be ready.” His words are sincere, and my heart grows fonder of him at his honesty.

Reaching forward, I grasp his face between my hands, running my thumb along his bottom lip. “I like you. A lot. I’ve never felt this for another man before and it scares me.” I take a deep breath. “This is all new to me. The dating, the touching…the kissing. I have some things I’m working through, and I have issues trusting other people, but you’ve been breaking down the wall I put up so long ago little by little.”

He smiles and kisses my finger that is tracing his lips. “Well, dating is kind of new for me also, so how about we explore this together? I will never push you, but I do want you to know you can trust me. I would never do anything to hurt you, Blaire.”

Leaning forward, I place a gentle kiss to his lips. “I’m truly starting to feel that.”

CAMDEN

Smoke from the grill is making me sweat and the Florida heat in August isn’t much help either. Somehow, I was put on grilling duty when usually it’s Mateo’s job, but he vouched out of it because standing over a hot open flame in this weather is not desirable. I had ditched my tank I had been wearing and even with just swim trunks on, I’m sweating nonstop.

From the corner of my eye, I see Blaire sitting on one of the loungers, talking with her roommate, who is stretched out, soaking in the sun in her bathing suit. My girl hasn’t taken her T-shirt and shorts off and I’m partially glad because I don’t want the guys looking at her and yet I wouldn’t mind seeing her in a bikini.

After what happened in the kitchen, I wanted to give her space. If I couldn’t already tell she had very little experience before, her confession only made my assumptions true. I didn’t lie to her when I said I’m happy to wait until she’s ready, but I feel like there is more to just her inexperience and she isn’t telling me what. Blaire said I was breaking down her walls and hopefully I could become someone she could trust. Someone who she felt comfortable enough to give herself to. Mind and body.

“Food is ready,” I call out as I scrape the last burger off the grill. We kept it simple with burgers, hot dogs, and chips the girls brought.

There are far fewer of us here than at our usual parties. It’s only my roommates: Maddox, Mateo, Conrad, and Levi. Blaire, Emree, and Mateo’s childhood friend, Jules, are the only women here. We also invited our teammates Drew and Jax. It’s a more chill evening, except for the fact that Maddox is drinking himself away and stumbling as he walks over to the patio table we set up with all the food.

“You’re such a good provider, Cammy,” Maddox slurs as he grabs a plate and burger bun, lifting a hot patty with his fingers.
