“Blaire,” he says slowly, as if feeling my name on his lips. The way his deep voice says my name makes the hairs on my arms stand up. My body has never had a reaction like this to someone simply saying my name.

Standing from his seat, Camden grabs his notebook from the desk and looks down at me. His eyes are boring into mine, his eyebrows drawn together, and I feel vulnerable for some reason, which I don’t like.

“It’s nice to officially meet you, Blaire. I’ll see you around,” he says, then makes his way to the classroom door.

I stare at the empty doorway for far too long, confused as hell at the reaction my body had to Camden. I’ve never felt this…this tingling all over when I was around anyone. I’m not sure how to feel about it yet.

CAMDEN

Pushing through the bathroom door, I slam my notebook down on the sink counter and run my hands through my long hair. I really need to cut it, but I haven’t had the time to go get it done.

Blaire is in my head, and I wasn’t sure how someone I just met could make me feel this way. Her small, fragile form makes me want to protect her from the world. I’ve never felt this…this fierceness over anyone other than my little sister, Trazia, and my mother. But Blaire? Something inside me is saying that this girl needs protecting. From what, I am not sure.

I close my eyes, remembering the lost look in her eyes as she stared into my own. I could tell she tried to hide it, but there were glimpses when she let it slip. Looking up into the mirror, I stare back at my reflection. I don’t know why, but I have this urge to run back to that room and be around Blaire. She drew me in. Not just her looks, but I’m not complaining about those either. Blaire is fucking hot. She has a rockin’ body, with a generous chest and nice curves. Her skin is pale, like it hasn’t been touched by the sun, and she has these big, gray eyes that look like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The color is so unique, they practically hypnotize you as they draw you in.

It was the vulnerability I saw when she looked at me. I don’t think she meant for me to see it, but I noticed. Something is haunting her, and I want to know what it is.

I use the bathroom before heading to my next class. Without thinking, I search for Blaire, hoping we have this class together too. No luck, though. Someone calls out my name and I turn my head in the direction of the sound.

Fuck. This is not what I needed right now.

Chloe is sitting at one of the desks with the seat next to her empty. There are two girls in the seats ahead of hers turned around facing her, and they giggle as I take them in.

She smiles when I look at her, then points to the empty seat to her right. Yeah, there’s no way in hell that’s happening. I don’t want to be anywhere near that girl and her annoying, high-pitched voice.

Someone slings their arm over my shoulder. Maddox is there with a toothpick hanging from his mouth.

“Well, what the hell are the chances, man? Looks like we get to enjoy some American Lit together. Glad I don’t have to suffer alone and you’ll be here to keep me awake, because I’m betting you right-fucking-now, this shit is going to be boring as hell.” He drops his arm and heads toward an empty table on the other side of the room as Chloe.Thank God.

Luckily, it isn’t just Maddox and me in this class either. Two of our teammates, Levi, our roommate, and George, are also here with us.

Unlike my last class, this professor didn’t decide to actually teach today. Smart man, since I don’t think I can handle another hour and a half of boring lecturing.

He lets the class out after he finishes talking about the syllabus, and everyone makes a dash for the door.

Maddox and I are walking down the hallway, heading for the exit, when a slender hand latches onto my bicep. Stopping, Chloe is there to my right, sliding her fake nails up and down my forearm. Maddox continues walking toward the exit, leaving me alone with her. I’m not sure if she’s clueless or just hell-bent on adding me to her tally of players she’s banged.

“Can I help you?” I ask, making sure she can tell I’m annoyed by the tone of my voice.

She doesn’t flinch at my harsh tone, which surprises me. Most girls would bitch me out or huff and stomp away. It didn’t even seem to faze Chloe.

One of her hands starts massaging my bicep, and if I didn’t want to get away from this chick so bad, it might actually feel good. But all I want is for her to leave me the hell alone.

“I don’t have any more classes today. What do you say we get out of here, huh? My dorm is empty. Or we could head back to your place?” She bats her fake eyelashes at me. It takes every bit of self-control I have not to roll my eyes. Her vanilla perfume is overpowering my senses, and I’m suddenly not a fan of the smell of vanilla.

There was a time when this was the norm for me. Take a chick back to her place, bang her, and leave satisfied. For some reason, though, the idea of hooking up with Chloe, or anyone right now, doesn’t entice me.

Gray eyes flash in my mind.Blaire. The thought of her excites me. Of seeing and talking to her. I want to go and find her, learn more about her. Just hearing that sweet, soft voice would be enough. Last thing I want is to deal with girls like Chloe, who only want me for one thing.

Detaching my arm from Chloe’s hold, I step back away from her. “Uh, yeah, I’m going to have to pass on that. But thanks for the offer.” Before she can say anything, I head back to Maddox and continue walking out the door with him at my side.

Once I’m safely outside, I can take a breath of fresh air.

“Want to talk about what all that was? You looked like Chloe was going to attack you or something. I’ve never seen you run from a girl before, and definitely not one as hot as her,” Maddox says as he pulls a protein bar out of his backpack.

Shrugging my shoulders, I do a quick scan of the courtyard for Blaire, but she’s nowhere around. “Nothing to talk about. She’s just not taking no for an answer and I didn’t feel like talking with her, that’s all.”
