“The only thing that sounds remotely tempting is a popsicle.”

“Any particular flavor?”

“Raspberry or banana.” Ten minutes later, there’s an entire bag of blue and yellow popsicles sitting on the kitchen counter and everyone’s eating one. It’s an amusing site. I only manage a half of a yellow one, and another glass of water. I lay on the sofa with my head on Cole’s lap.

“Coulter, we should talk about Lawton,” Kit says, sitting in one of the side chairs eating his third Popsicle.

“I know. Let’s not jump to any conclusions just yet. Lawton is part of Prescott Holdings.

“Where do they ship too?” Alan asks.

“They ship to Asia and Australia.”

“And Lawton is part of the merger you just did with the Everett’s?”

“Yes.”

“So, do you know why Mezzo wants your shipping company?” Alan asks.

“To try and bankrupt me. I’m not sure. When I decided I wanted to merge Prescott Holdings, The Mezzo corporation was on the short list along with the Everett Corp, but he didn’t have numbers Kit and Race did. He wanted the merger, but I wouldn’t even meet with him. I went after Race and Kit. I knew they were the solid investment, the money-making investment. If I had a guess, I’d say he’s mad and wants some payback.” Cole looks over at Race. “Are you regretting your decision?”

“No, you didn’t know Mezzo would go to these lengths. Stock is already up and once the papers are signed for Prescott-Holt and Everett, we’ll be unstoppable. Besides, business with you is never dull.”

I raise my hand. “That’s my doing. You’re welcome.” Everyone laughs.

“I’ll send the accountant and a few lawyers to do an appraisal of the business. Make it look like we’re getting ready to sell.” Cole looks up at Luke. “Luke, what do you think?”

“I think you’re right. Drag your feet on the sale but not too much. Let’s see if we can figure out if it’s really Mezzo who’s behind this and why they want Lawton so badly. For now, everyone needs to take security with them everywhere. And I’m almost positive Olivia’s blackmailer is connected to all of this.”

I tense and try to sit up, but Cole holds me, turning me slightly so I’m looking up at him. My eyes flit to Kit, then back to Cole. “Baby, I’m sorry, but Kit needed to know. We will keep this as quiet as we can for my dad’s and Olivia’s sake.” He runs his hand along my cheek to calm me.

I glance back at Kit. “Sorry Kit.”

He shrugs, sitting back in the chair. “It’s the consequence I pay for my actions. However pleasurable they were.”

Luke moves farther into the living room. “Which leads to another thing; no strange women and one-night stands.”

“Kate, can I get your cousin’s number?”

“Ha ha. Hilarious, Christopher.”

“Ouch, so harsh.”

“Kit?”

“Yes, Kate.”

“Promise me, no random women.”

I open my eyes and watch Kit grumble under his breath. “Fine, I promise, as long as you make Race promise.”

I look over at Race and raise my eyebrows. “I promise.”

“Thank you,” I say, closing my eyes.

“Let’s meet here tomorrow at eleven, and we’ll get started on a more strategic plan,” Cole says.

Luke looks from Cooper to Alan. “Unfortunately, I think that Cooper and Alan need to abide by the same rules. We’ve seen from tonight, that they’re willing to go to extreme lengths.”
