Who is she?

“I can’t believe this.” Vanessa sniffs, pursing her lips.

I’m about to look away, bothered that I might be in any way bothered by this, when Luke appears. The lady springs up and Luke wraps her in a huge bear hug, lifting her off her feet.

Aware that I can’t exactly stay here, gawking, in the breakroom forever, I sidle slowly towards the little reunion. When I get to the door, I hover for a moment. Liam looks up and waves me in, and I step inside, weirdly nervous.

“Hi, again,” I say to the woman.

“Annie,” Liam says. “I’d like you to meet Lana Mae.”

Oh!

“Lana Mae!” I say, way too loudly. “Liam’s sister, Lana Mae.”

I’m ashamed of the amount of sweet relief in my veins right now.

“Hi!” I tack on for good measure.

Lana Mae whips off her sunglasses and turns to me. Fixes me with big, dark eyes. She’s the spitting image of her daughter.

“I thought that might be you in the elevator! I’m so happy to finally meet you, Annie.” Lana shoots a cheeky look at Liam. “I’ve heardsomuch about you.”

“Really?” A glow rises in me. He’s talked about me?

“Just a normal amount of things,” Liam adds hurriedly, shooting his sister a warning glance.

Luke laughs heartily and slaps his brother on the back. Hard. “Whatever you tell yourself, bro.”

Something about the way Liam looks at me, carefully taking in my reaction, makes my heart feel full.

LIAM

“Come onnnnn,” Lana whines in a tone that sounds startlingly like Legs. We’re standing downstairs in the lobby. I want to go back upstairs to work. But my sister apparently has other plans. “You totally have time for lunch.”

Luke checks his phone, chuckling. “We won’t even grill you too hard about Annie.”

“Shh,” I hiss, glancing around to see if anyone heard.

“You’re coming. My treat.” Lana loops her arm through mine. “I have to thank you guys for taking care of Legs.”

I let out a sigh. “Fine. I have thirty minutes.”

“You own the company. You have as much time as you want.”

“Forty minutes, final offer.”

“We can do an hour, no sweat.” Luke then leans towards Lana conspiratorially. “We’ll needat leastan hour to cover everything. Just wait until you hear about the One Direction debacle.”

Lana clasps her hands. “There was a debacle?”

“Liam had his shirt off.”

“Oh, this is going to be good.”

I press my lips together. “Changed my mind. I’m not going anywhere with you two.”
