“I KNEW IT!” Luke crows. He whips out his phone. “I have to call Mindy and—”

I swat the phone out of his hand.

“Hey, that’s a brand new iPhone!”

“Wasa brand new iPhone.”

“Are you going to ask her out?” Lana Mae asks.

“It’s complicated. She’s my employee, and we’ve already accidentally shared a bed. She could report me for sexual harassment if I make a glimmer of a wrong move.”

“Like kissing her in my backyard?”

“What?” Luke whips his head around to look at me so fast, he almost upsets the pizza box.

I frown at Lana. “How do you—”

“I stopped by Legs’s school to see her before coming here.” She smirks. “She might be young, but she ain’t no dummy.”

The heat is rising to my collar. I scratch my neck, not sure where to look.

Meanwhile, Luke is smiling like I just announced that I found the solution to world peace. “You kissed her?”

I shake my head. “No. But… almost. I think. Legs came outside just as we, um…’

Luke hoots. “Oh, this is good! This is too good!”

“Seriously, shut up, Luke.” Lana Mae punches him lightly on the arm. He punches her back.

“You should ask her to my wedding,” he says all too gleefully.

“I couldn’t.”

Luke wiggles his eyebrows. “Maybe I’ll invite the entire office then.”

“You are a serious douchebag sometimes, you know that?”

It’s strange—usually, Luke drives me crazy with his antics. But even as I insult him, I notice the smile in my voice.

I’m happy that he’s happy for me,I realize.

And I’m happy that something other than my family is making me happy.

Or someone, I should say.

I take a breath, processing the sensation. I can’t remember the last time I leaned into anything I was feeling.

Luke leans over and ruffles my hair. “I just want my wittle Liam to be happy.”

“I’d be happy if you went to play in traffic for a bit.” I jerk away from him, but I can’t help it. The smile isn’t just in my voice anymore, it’s on my face.

“If you don’t ask her to be your date for the wedding, maybe I’ll ask her to be mine.” Lana Mae grins cheekily.

“I hate you both.” I smile. “But I’ll think about it.”

“That’s a start,” Lana Mae says happily.

“Well don’t think for too long,” Luke says. “We got laser tag tonight—it’s the perfect romantic setting to ask a woman out.”
