Confused over the fact he doesn’t care about the murder downstairs but is upset by my battered arm, I soften in my exasperation. He’s been nothing but patient with me and wants to help. I really don’t understand these people at all.

However, I do understand Titan seething in the doorway. Nothing stands between us but scorched earth as he lasers in on the welts. His chest heaves as he mutters words I can’t hear but understand perfectly.

“Everyone out.”

Zero resistance from Dr. Crawford or Chelsea as they both scramble to comply with Titan’s order. His strained growl leaves no room for argument. Even though Chelsea still has to get in another criticism as she hurries out of the room.

“I told you, Titan! I hope you made him pay for what he did to my sister-in-law.”

Words can’t form in my mouth to correct her erroneous label of our relationship. Titan storming toward me steals my breath. I’m getting the hell out of here too.

Quick on Chelsea’s heels, I streak past him only to have his huge arm wrap around my waist and jerk my body flush against his.

I barely register anything, but the steel rod shoved into my lower back. It’s sick that me running makes him hard. It’s even more sick that I like it.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

“Close the door behind you, Doc.”

The latch clicks with the finality of an execution.

They’re gone.

We’re alone.

I’m dead.

I’ll fight to the end though. I dig my fingernails into his forearm and yank down. My struggle to break his grip is worthless. To add insult to injury, he laughs in my ear.

“I thought my men could stop you without touching you. But I should’ve known better with a little fireball like you.”

“Let me go!”

I change tactics and pound my fists into his thighs. He laughs harder and walks us over to the bed. Before I can react, I’m on my back, bouncing up and down on the mattress from the force of him flipping me over so effortlessly onto the blankets.

When I sit up, he easily pushes me down and climbs on top of me. I’m completely immobile with his heavy body on mine. Too mad to be scared, I bore into his gaze. “Get off!”

He props up on his elbows and stares at me. “God you’re beautiful.”

Involuntarily, I stop. No one has ever called me beautiful before except for him. I shouldn’t be so desperate for compliments and affection but I am. The hunger in his dark eyes proves he’s telling the truth.

And that I was right.

Regardless of what anyone says, nothing comes without strings. All generosity comes with a price. Now he’s here to collect for the clothes and the food and the amazingly comfortable bed with clean sheets he’s about to ruin.

I turn my head away from his relentless scrutiny. Pete’s lying on the floor now. Soulful eyes watch us, but he’s calm and quiet. Oblivious to Titan’s intentions, he has no fear. I’m grateful and plan to keep him safe. At least I can protect him from any torture by getting this over as quickly as possible.

The beast on top of me nuzzles my neck, breathing deep. He’s overwhelming but gentle. His lips caress my ear.

“I’m sorry I let them hurt you. It willneverhappen again.”

No ambiguity as the ferocity screams through his whispered apology.

I’m so confused.

He restrains me against my will while asking for my forgiveness. He makes no sense. None of this makes any sense. “You’ve got my head spinning. You leave and come back. You call the doctor and then kick him out. I don’t know what you want.”

Thick fingers push against my jawline, forcing me to turn back to look at him.
