“Because of him, I never got to see Maxim again. And it was so embarrassing. I mean he’s going to think I’m the biggest baby being dragged out of the club by my brother.”

She rolls over to face me. Shiny eyes study my expression. “What if he doesn’t want to marry me anymore?”

Shit. Reality smacks me from her broken whisper. I hate that she’s scared of losing Maxim, but I’m terrified of her angering Titan. “Don’t cry. I’ll help you.”

“Really?” She sniffs and dabs at the tears on her cheeks. “You will?”

Maybe not in the way she thinks although I’ll try my damnedest. When I nod, she squawks and scrambles to her feet. This girl’s tilt-a-whirl of emotions spins faster than mine. “Thank you! Thank you so much!”

The jangle of her bracelets makes Pete bark when she smacks the mattress. “Get up! Get up! Let’s go get my man!”

She’s serious, yanking off the sheet and revealing my bare body underneath. Her hands fly to cover her eyes as she giggles. Until she remembers Pete sees me naked too. She peeks between her fingers to find his face and shields him from my nudity too.

I grab Titan’s tee shirt and drag the black material over my head, breathing his scent deep into my lungs. “We can’t go now. It’s the middle of the night.”

“It’s only two thirteen. They don’t close until three.”

She points to the French doors leading out to the terrace. “We can sneak into the garage, grab the keys Miquel hides under the tool rack, and be there in twenty minutes.”

“Then what?”

Lines cover her forehead as she frowns at me and my question. She doesn’t understand, and I don’t know if she ever will. “You need to tell Titan you’re dating someone. He can make sure you’re safe because—”

“I am safe! Maxim loves me!”

I can’t help but smile. Her hands ball into fists on her hips. She believes in him and his feelings for her.

God, I truly hope they are mutual. I blow out a breath. “I only met him tonight, but he really did seem to care about you.”

The anger fades away, and a dreamy expression returns as her face smooths and her hands lay on top of each other, pressing against her heart. Now that she’s calm again, I can try to explain. “I don’t think he’s a DJ. I think he’s a powerful man like Titan. Those bouncers were his security guards. Maxim may not hurt you, but he could put you in danger even if he doesn’t mean to.”

Her head droops down. “Like my brother.”

Not a question. Sometimes she understands things more than I realize. When she looks up again, her features are drawn.

“Did you know when I was little, I got kidnapped?”

An ache throbs in my belly, and I shake my head.

“We don’t know what happened to me while I was gone. But Titan said when they found me, I was unconscious with a huge lump on my head, and they weren’t sure if I was ever going to wake up.”

I reach for her hand. She’s always the one clinging to me, and now I don’t want to let her go. “I’m glad you were okay.”

She shrugs. “Kind of, I guess. I’ve always struggled in school, and I know Titan thinks I’m dumb.”

Damn. “He doesn’t think you’re dumb, I swear. He loves you and just wants to protect you. Like I do. That’s why I think you should be honest. It’s better for him to know because you tell him than for him to find out another way.”

Her fingers squeeze mine. “Will you go with me when I talk to him?”

Thank goodness. “Yes, and we need to do it as soon as he gets home.”

The relief must be mutual because she envelopes me in a massive hug. He’ll be furious but at least he’ll know. Then he can figure out if this guy is okay. And, if he’s not, then I’ll be going after him myself for endangering my friend.

Titan

I look like shit.

I smell like sex.
