And there’s that big family he wants…

So many changes. And most of them good.

“Why the long face?” Robyn asks as Cassidy heads out to dance. I linger back with her, pausing before I go face the crowd again.

“Just thinking about my dad is all.”

“Oh, sweetie. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay, really, it’s fine. I’m glad he’s in custody and serving his sentence and honestly, I wouldn’t want him here anyway. It’s just hard thinking about how much things have changed.”

“But changed for the better, right? I mean, look at you now. I’ve never, ever seen you this happy before.”

“You’re right.” I squeeze her hand. “Let’s get back out there before Carmine start flipping tables trying to find me.”

“That man really is possessive, isn’t it?”

I head out into the main room and suddenly he’s there sweeping me away, and Robyn’s right, Carmine’s extremely possessive—and I love every second of his intense and doting attention. He looks at me like I’m glowing, like I’m the sun and he’s a planet flying around my orbit and basking in my heat. I love him more than I ever dreamed I could and I feel all my doubts slowly melt away as he leads me onto the dance floor, my body held against his, and we sway together.

“Wife,” he says, smiling.

“Husband.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Are you enjoying your wedding?”

“I love it. Are you having fun too?”

“Ah, you know.” He tilts his head, smirking. “There’s always business.”

“Don’t work too hard. I don’t want you to be too tired.”

His eyes flash and he kisses me gently. A cheer goes up nearby and I blush as he laughs. “Don’t worry, filthy girl,” he whispers in my ear. “I’m never too tired for you.”

I let him sweep me away then, and we fall into the rhythm of the song and I dance with my husband, my husband, my Carmine, so filled with darkness but with a little ray of light, and I feel my own stripe of black in the middle of all that joy, and I think I’m stronger for it. Together, we can handle this, we can handle what comes next—and we can handle anything.

Chapter One: Karah

When Papa finds out what I did, he’s going to kick me out of the family.

Well, probably not. I am his only daughter, after all, and he’s a big softie at heart. Casso says Papa’s too easy on me, and maybe he’s right, but mostly I think Casso’s jealous since Papa nitpicks every one of his mistakes. Sometimes it’s good to be the oldest boy, but sometimes it’s a lot harder.

Papa won’t toss me out on my own, but he’s definitely going to yell, and Papa’s terrifying when he yells.

I hold my head up high as I march down the long hall that snakes along the spine of the Bruno family home. We call it Villa Bruno, even though there’s nothing provincial about our massive block-sized home in the heart of the Arizona desert a half hour outside of Phoenix. It’s a beastly construction of glass, wood, and slate, designed by some famous architect that loves the Southwest, so there’s plenty of turquoise and cacti and big natural red rocks jutting out all over the property. It’s beautiful, but it’s deathly hot. The house is like a maze even to me and I grew up in it.
