"Actually, I know it's only midday, but maybe something a little stronger?" I take my shoes off and walk over to the couch in the main area to sit down.

My head pounds as I try my best to calm myself down. I could have been taking what Micha said the wrong way. I've never known him to try and blackmail anyone, but then again, maybe I don't know him as well as I thought I did.

I became a lawyer to put people in jail, but the right people. After going through the evidence on my own, I already know there's a high chance that Rhett Dyer couldn't have pulled off that robbery. There's just no way, but even after telling Micha that he's determined that I put the man behind bars. Why? What did I stumble into?

"You look like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders." Kai says, and once again I jump when I realize that he's so close to me.

"Damn it man. Why are you so quiet. You need a bell or something." I press a hand to my chest to stop my heart from beating out of my chest.

"Yeah, I don't think I need to announce my presence in my own home." He pushes the small tumbler of brown liquid into my hands before he grabs hold of his side chair and sits down. A tumbler in his hand as well.

"Now that we're here, you want to let me know what's going on?" He crosses his leg over his knee, and the movement tightens his slacks.

He's a tall, fit man. Not too bulky, but in that position I can see the muscles defined in his leg.

He's yummy.

I shake the thoughts out of my head. I'm not here to ogle him, I'm here to see if he can help me figure out what's really going on between Dyer and Micha.

"I'm not sure where to start. It's all highly irregular for me."

"Well, start with what's this about?" He sips his drink, and my eyes focus on his mouth when he slowly licks the drop of liquor for his lip.

Fuck me, I wish he'd lick something off me.

Again, I force myself to focus on the problem at hand.

"It's about the case." I say, sitting back against the couch.

"Ahh, now you know I'm not going to discuss an ongoing case with you. Unless this is in the best interest of my client, I have nothing to say to you in that regard.

"I know, first can I just inquire about any relationship between Rhett Dyer and Micha Ulgar?"

"Connection? I don't know of any relationship between the two of them. Why would there be?"

"Any reason why there would be a reason for someone to be going after Rhett? Blackmail?"

Now I've got his undivided attention, he leans forward, putting his cup down on the floor, and stares at me. His expression is severe, and I see him clenching his jaw.

"No, he's just a fighter. Someone who works in a boxing gym. Like I said, there's no connection that I know of." He repeats. "Look, Marcella, tell me what's going on. Spit it out in plain English."

"I don't know what I'm spitting out. I could be wrong." I let out a harsh sigh and get up from the couch. I can't sit still anymore not when my mind is moving a million miles a minute. If I tell Kai this, not only will I be sabotaging my own case, but maybe my career as well. "I could've taken his words the wrong way. I don't know. God, I just don't fucking know." I tug on the bottom of my button down shirt. Suddenly, it just feels too damn hot in here.

Kai gets up and stands in front of me. He places his hands on my arms and stops me from moving. "Hey, take a breath and just start from the beginning. If it's nothing like you think that we can figure that out, but if the case has been compromised by either side, we owe it to Dyer and the fucking legal system to make sure that it's handled." Kai says, and just from the strength in his voice, I feel some of the uncertainty drain out of me.

"Okay, I just need to bounce this off someone who's not in my office." I take a step back, needing to get out of his immediate space. I don't want a repeat of what happened the other day, "I took this as a favor for Micha Ulgar, he said he knew the owners of the diamond store, and they wanted us to handle the legal case. Based on the information presented, the tape, the key code, everything made it seem like this would be an open-and-shut case. Once I started to dig a little deeper to find out information on my own, I realized quickly that there was almost no way that Mr. Dyer could have been the one to pull off this robbery." I look up at Kai expecting to see an expression of victory, but he's still rapt waiting for me to continue the story. "I'm all for putting people in jail, but I put people who deserve to go to jail there. I can't completely clear Rhett of all the charges because there's still a bit of coincidence that needs to be looked in on, but I did think there was enough reasonable doubt for me to not put up that much of a fight when it came to renegotiating his bail."

Kai finally intervenes. "I appreciate the assist."

I nod and continue, "Anyway, once the judge made his decision, Micha became almost unrecognizably irate. He told me that I needed to make sure Dyer went away. He said I had everything I needed to close the case, almost as if it were planted or something like that. I informed him that he can't dictate to me how I run the case and if he did have a problem with it, he could take over and I would step down. He says I don't have an option. He says I have to win the case and do it quickly. I don't want to think Micha will do anything as heinous as coming after me, but I know he seems to be going after Rhett. I can't step down, but I can't put Rhett in jail for some shit he didn't do either. I'm fucking stuck." I release a cleansing breath once I finish.

"No, you're not stuck. I don't know why Micha is trying to intimidate you, but I agree this shit seems shady as fuck." Kai scrubs a hand down his face and takes off his tie.

"What do you suggest we do, counselor?"

He raises an eyebrow and the corner of his lip jumps in a smirk. "I suggest we get to work."

I came here as the woman who was going to finally bring the undefeated courtroom champion down and now I somehow ended up on his team.
