Page 5 of Facing Kai

"Passport? I see you haven't run the numbers. Your client is accused of stealing upwards of ten million dollars in gems and diamonds. With that kind of money, there's no need for a passport." She says in a sarcastic and skeptical voice.

"Of course, you're assuming that my client is already guilty. I am not, and the last time I checked the legal system was against assuming someone was guilty just because they are accused." I raise an eyebrow at her, but that only seemed to draw her further into the debate. She crosses her legs and smirks at me.

"I'm not assuming his guilt. I have proof. Looks like I'm going to be the first one to take down the infamous Kai Yang."

My cock jumps in my pants. She wouldn't be the first one to take me down, but I'm thinking I might like whatever she wants to do to me. I hiss out in annoyance at myself before I turn my gaze away from hers and squeeze my hands together into tight fists. My short nails dug into my calloused palms, slicing into the scars that my father left as a reminder for me all those years ago.

"Are you alright?" Marcella asks, and I flick my gaze back up to hers expecting to see a knowing smirk on her face. Many times women try to use their sexuality to get a leg up. It's never worked on me before, and I'm not sure why she's affecting me so completely right now.

To my surprise, instead of smug conceitedness on her face I see concern. For the umpteenth time, her reaction is not what I thought.

Can it be that she really doesn't know just what kind of effect she has? I can't be the only man who reacted to her like this. I've known her for all of seven minutes, and already she's unraveling years of my calm collective nature. I refuse to believe that those sable brown eyes hadn't locked on to anyone else's soul and knocked them on their ass.

"I'm fine." I bite back, "Like I said, my client won't be staying in prison past tomorrow morning when we get in front of a judge. If you have so-called proof, then I'll be more than happy to face off with you in court, though I have to warn you I don't back down. You won't get this win as easily as you think you will. Though, just from looking at you, I'm guessing you don't mind doing things the hard way."

Her lips part and I inwardly groan.

Shit, that was the wrong thing to say. Shit!

"No, I don't as long as I get the results I want. I'm not one to shy away from a hard day's work."

Thankfully, Marcella steers the conversation in the right direction.

"That's good to hear, it's been a long while since anyone has stood up to the task of challenging me in the courtroom. I'm interested in finding out what you and your client will bring to the table." I reach into my wallet and pull out one of my business cards. My fingers brushing over the condom I keep stashed in there. Oh, my body zings at the contact. I would love to be using it right now with this intriguing and intoxicating woman.

I slide over the card to her, and she picks it up gingerly. "If you have any other information that you'd like to discuss before we get any further into this, please do not hesitate to call. As always, I'm here for the pursuit of justice, not for my own personal gain." I say in complete honesty.

I may not ever lose a case, but I'm not looking to just have murderers and rapists running the streets to keep my loses to zero.

"I couldn't agree with you more." She stands, picking her briefcase from the floor in the same instance. She digs in the side pocket and pulls out her card to hand to me. She leans forward, and I have to drill my gaze into hers to keep myself from looking for even the smallest bit of cleavage. When our fingers touch, I watch her eyes dilate and that sexy gasp pull through her lips again.

God, how I wish I knew what she was thinking.

I wish I knew what I could do to keep her making those noises.

CHAPTER FOUR

MARCELLA

What in the world was that?

Kai is nothing like I thought he'd be. As I was sitting there in front of him, it felt like he was a magician. Every word that fell from his lips sounded sinful and dangerous. His jet black eyes seemed to be more expressive than anyone else's I'd ever seen in my life. But what pulled me in the most is that don't fuck with me aura he has wrapped around his very being.

Kai reminds me of the sleeping lion. Lying there lazy, and completely unmoved but one look into its eyes and no one would dare mess with it, not unless you look forward to having your head chewed off.

That danger and mystery only makes me want to poke him even more. I want to rile him up, hear him roar and snap at me.

It's like I can't help myself. I want to see if he's really as dangerous as he seems. But at the same time, I'm also afraid of what might happen if I do.

Even as I walk out of his office, it takes me a few minutes to get my breathing under control. I've had my fair share of trysts, but they've always been careful, calculated and planned out. There might have been a spark of arousal or lust, but nothing as intense as what I just felt in that room. I need to be focused on how to bring Rhett down, but instead I'm thinking about the next time I can get Kai alone in a room.

"Get your head together!" I chide myself. I look back over my shoulder to see if he's coming outside when I hear sounds of someone moving around just inside the office building I walked out of. The last thing I want is for him to think that I've been standing here waiting for him to come out, so I rush over to my car which is on the far side of the parking lot.

As I make it to my car, I watch him come out of his office and fumble with the key to my old Nissan Altima. "Shit!" I hiss out as the bunch of keys drops to the floor and skids under the car.

I have to get down on my hands and knees to reach it, but as I do, I hear the scraping of hard soled shoes on the ground. Holy crap, he's going to come over here.

With a stretch of my arm, I wrap my fingers around one of my key rings. My body freezes in place when I see not only one pair of shoes coming from Kai's building, but also two more coming from the sides. I can't force myself up, no matter how much my knees ache from the gravel digging into my skin. I'm just being paranoid. Nothing's happening. They must be…
