“Got some news I wanna share with you,” he says, glancing around as he steps forward.

“And what’s that?” I cock my head side-to-side hoping to ease the tension starting to build within me. I don’t have a good feeling I’ll like anything that he’s about to say.

“Saw on the TV this morning, there was an interview with Ezra and Niko,” he announces.

“Fuck,” I snarl under my breath, and out of the corner of my eye, I spot my brother coming into the gym, his eyes directly on me.

Great.

Just what I need. I’ve done my best to avoid my brother. Any time he’s around me, he’s trying to find out what’s going on with me and it’s starting to piss me off.

“I know it’s not what you want to hear, but they’ve been making comments. Ezra hasn’t come out and said it directly, but he’s definitely talking smack about you.”

“Right,” I grumble, clenching my teeth together, and turn my attention as Rhett joins us.

“What’s going on?” he asks, glancing between Kai and myself.

“Nothing,” I grunt and nod to Kai. “I’ll check with you later. I’ve gotta finish up here and get on with the rest of my day.”

“Yeah,” Kai says, getting the hint. He knows I don’t want anyone else to know what’s going on.

“You gonna ever fuckin’ tell me what’s going on with you?” Rhett demands as Kai walks away.

“Nothing to talk about.” I shrug and turn back to the punching back. “What are you doing here anyway? I thought I heard Travis say you were off today.” I knew he was working here after the mess that went down with his previous boss who tried to set him up. It sucks he went through that, but it’s nothing like my situation.

“Had to take the day off,” he snarks and steps closer. “I just got off the phone with Mom. She wants everyone over for dinner tonight. Told her I’d tell you since I knew you’d be here.”

“What does she want us over for?” It’s not that Mom doesn’t ask us over for dinner. She normally sticks to the weekends, though.

“Don’t know. Maybe it’s got something to do with you not telling us shit about what’s going on with you.”

“Drop it, Rhett,” I snarl, casting him a glare that’s known to make other men take a step back. “I’m not doing this with you.”

“Whatever,” Rhett snaps back and leaves me to what I’m doing.

I know when it comes to my brother, it’s not whatever. He’s biding his time just as I’m doing. I don’t want to get into it with him, but I know it’s gonna happen sooner or later. One thing about my brother is the two of us have always butted heads when we didn’t see eye to eye on something. Me not talking to him about what’s going on is definitely getting to him, and if I’m honest with myself, it’s getting to me as well.

Finishing up in the gym, I head to the locker room, shower, and get dressed. I need to get out of here and away before Rhett decides to confront me again. Hopefully, when I go to leave, he’ll be gone. He said he had things to do today, so it’s a good chance, but with my luck, I can’t be sure.

Regardless, I’ll end up seeing him again today since Mom’s asked us all to dinner at her place.

I don’t know how much more I can take before I blow, and when that happens, I fear what the outcome will be.

Sitting around the table, I pick at my plate, not really tasting the food, even though Mom made her famous baked spaghetti with the cream cheese-sour cream filling in it. That shit is good. Add the fact she made her fresh garlic bread, and you’ll feel you’ve died and gone to heaven. It’s the best, but right now, I barely taste it while keeping quiet and listening around the table.

I’m surprised Christina’s not here with Rhett, but when we got here and Mom asked, he explained that Christina had a test to study for. Thinking about the way my little brother is settling down makes me wonder if I’ll ever end up doing that.

Visions of Haven and me pop into my head, and I can’t help but feel like it’s a good chance when it comes to her that I could have that.

“So, I have an announcement,” Mom says, getting my full attention.

“What’s that?” Rhett asks.

“Yeah, I was surprised you wanted to have dinner tonight. You never do family meals during the week. Just so happens I was off tonight,” Reyna states, lifting her glass of tea to her lips, watching Mom inquisitively.

I keep quiet and wait for Mom to speak up.
