Laurent Industries made everything from tablets to smartphones and had the software. Axis Management created cutting-edge technology that improved the hardware, like the non-breakable glass designed for smartphones and tablets they were working on.

Axis Management also took on government contracts, had investments in solar energy and airplane technology and, oh yeah, ran the secret operative team he was a member of.

The job of Team Stealth was to go in and get out.

Whether it was rescuing an artifact or rescuing the daughter of an actor, Team Stealth didn’t exist. Which is why he couldn’t tell his sister and mother what he did.

“And you say you are a consultant,” Colette tsked.

“I haven’t been by in a couple of weeks or checked my email,” Nick grinned.

His mother sighed, “What am I going to do with you?”

“Anyways, Nicky, it’s time to put your big boy pants on. There’s an opening Gala next weekend, and you need to come with a date. And you need to vote at the general meeting.”

“No, I’ve abstained for years,” Nick said. Because if he didn’t, he’d vote against his father.

“Can’t get out of it, Nicky,” Colette grinned coolly at him. “All members must vote, no exception unless you want mom to lose her seat at the table.”

“How does that work?” The tension in his neck throbbed.

“Your father’s clause. I can maintain voting rights only if I have two other family members there, to make it “fair,”” his mother said.

“Stella always votes,” Nicky said.

Colette and his mother turned identical smiles on him. “Mamie refuses to step foot outside of Quebec, Nicky.”

Nick closed his eyes. Of course, she did.

Stella Laurent, his father’s mother, was a force to be reckoned with. He could imagine the conversation when his dad told her about the move. But his grandmother was happiest in her estate, just outside Québec City.

“When do I have to show up?”

“The vote is tomorrow morning. You and I are going to dinner at Dad’s new condo tonight.”

“Ugh. I can’t” Nick clutched his head in his hands.

“Yes, you will, Nicky. I helped your father build this company, and I will not lose my voice because my son doesn’t want to adult.”

“Of course not, Maman. I’ll go.”

“Great. Pick you up at six.” Colette kissed his cheek.

“And find a date, Nicky. Before next week,” his mother patted his cheek. “You’ll be photographed, remember. So make sure it’s someone suitable. Maybe not those two women I saw leaving your apartment.”

“Yes, Maman,” Nick replied.

His mother and sister flounced out, and he closed the door, sighing.

He was in hell. Officially, his worst nightmare came to his door, and he couldn’t escape it.

Nick reached for his phone, pausing on his Mamie’s number.

She’d still be sleeping.

He flicked over to his boss, Xander Montague and dialled.

“I was about to call you. The ambassador wants to see the message his son sent out to the dark web. I want you to look it over. Get here as soon as possible.”
