Mulberry tried to shake off the feeling, unsure why she suddenly felt so unsettled.

Maybe it’s because NIck’s not close, she thought.

She’d grown so used to his steely presence and so used to how safe he made her feel.

“Check out the sparkles in this red!” Emma held out the bottle to Mulberry.

“Sparkly.”

“You okay?”

“Yeah, I don’t know, just a little tired.”

“So..what’s the news with you and Nick? You said you had lots to share.”

Mulberry bit her lip, wishing she hadn’t shared that vague tidbit.

She had safety with Nick, and a whisper of fear wedged its way into her mind, yelling at her to be quiet about it or risk losing it.

“Things are good.”

“How good?” Emma raised her eyebrows.

Mulberry laughed, looking at her oldest friend, and Emma laughed too, and they giggled together, and Mulebrry’s worry melted away.

“Do you mind if I call Liz over? I could use more boosting before I do the thing.”

“I haven’t seen her since that night at Lush. Go for it.”

Emma’s phone rang in her hand before she could send the text. “Hi, Daddy. Good. Yes, I’ll be ready. Mulberry is keeping me company.”

Mulberry grinned as Emma rolled her eyes. “Okay, bye.”

“Am I supposed to be here?”

“Of course! He’s just nervous about making the announcement. I don’t know why. He’s been wanting to do it for months.”

“My mom gets nervous every time.”

“She does not!” Mulberry grinned.

“What else do you have to do to get ready?”

“Help me choose a dress? We can narrow it down before Liz gets here.”

“Show me the way.”

“As you can see, you need a map.”

Mulberry laughed, following her out of the living room, down a small hallway and into a medium-sized bedroom, the colour toupe, the bed a queen, with two dressers.

“Grace told me to bring my own bedsheets and stuff,” Emma gestured at the bed, with overstuffed pillows and a pretty floral bedspread.

“Yeah, she knows how to make any place feel like home.”

Guilt ate at her a bit. She hadn’t checked in with her mom today.

“Okay, so this blue jersey dress, or do I go linen pants with this sparkly black top? Or a skirt and shirt?”
