She looked Nick Laurent up and down again, and for a moment, she wondered what he’d look like without a shirt. She licked her lips.

“I’m supposed to get my hair done with Emma this afternoon and go to dinner.”

“Perfect. Your boyfriend can join you” Grace patted her arm. Her mom’s phone buzzed on the table. “Sorry, got to take this.”

As she left the room, Mulberry glanced at Xander. “You think this will work?”

“I think it’s worth a try. We can think of another solution if you are uncomfortable or the police don’t get anywhere.”

“So Nick, what’s your favourite colour? What’s your sign, and do you do yoga?”

Nick huffed. “No, I don’t do yoga.”

“Okay, so no hot yoga. Or that could be a real date thing. What do you think?” She waggled her eyebrows at him.

Xander coughed. Mulberry wondered what the man looked like when he laughed.

“It’s my job to keep you safe, so if that involves hot yoga, sign me up” his tone conveyed that he’d rather eat rocks. “I’m a Taurus. And I don’t have a favourite colour.”

“There are lots of times to cover the details. The important thing is that we have people on you wherever you go. Are you sure this is the route you want to take, Mulberry?” Xander’s voice softened.

She looked across the table at Nick. The bodyguard she couldn’t stop thinking about from the first time he had helped her walk out of that tent. Though there were other men with him, there was something about him that she couldn’t get out of her mind.

“Yes, Mr. Montague, I’m sure.”

“Okay. I’ll arrange with Stone Security and leave you to it.”

Her mom rushed back into the room. “Mulberry, I got to go to set. Do you want to come with me?”

Mulberry threw her shoulders back. This was her plan. She’d sell it.

“Nope, I’m fine with Nick. I want to keep that appointment with Emma,” she yawned, her body suddenly demanding sleep. “I need sleep. But so do you, mom.”

“I’m fine, honey. I have a light day. I’m going to Cassie’s friend’s house right after.”

“I’ve already had a suite prepared for you, Mulberry. Nick can show you the way, suite number four, Nick. Mulberry, Grace, please let me know if Axis Management can further assist you. I need to leave to take a meeting. Nick, we’ll touch base later.”

“Mr. Montague, do you think they’ll ever figure out who was behind the kidnapping?”

Xander stared at her, and Mulberry felt like he could see inside her head.

“I think enough time has passed, and if people intend to do something harmful, they feel they can try again. Yes, I believe we’ll figure out who is behind the kidnapping. Grace, I’m happy to walk you out.”

Mulberry hugged her mom.

“Call me, like, every ten minutes.”

“Mom.”

“And call your dad, too. He’s kind of a wreck.”

“Okay.”

“Thanks, Mr. Montague. Nice to meet you, Nick. I’m confident my daughter’s in good hands.”

Grace left. Heavy silence stretched between her and Mr. Grumpy. “So this is wild, right?”

“Yes,” Nick shoved his hands into his pockets.
