“You don’t need a weapon,” Nick said.

“Could have fooled me. No, I just needed to go to market with the Earpods ten years earlier, right? Because when tracking technology is involved, you’re interested.”

A tense moment lingered in the air. “Dad, yes, the Earpods got me interested, but I was just taking my time doing other things.”

Henri snorted. “Well, I hope you are done wasting your time now.”

“Dad, leave Nick to be,” Colette smiled. “You got him now.”

Henri ran a hand through his full head of white hair. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“What are you wearing tomorrow night, Mulberry?” Colette asked.

“I have a blue gown I think will be perfect. Do you want to see a pic?” Mulberry took her phone from her purse, scrolling.

“Of course!” Colette smiled.

“Wow, is that an Elie Saab gown?” Livia asked.

“Yes. I had it for an award show I didn’t end up attending. Is it too much?”: “No, it’s perfect. Maman, do you see this?”

“So pretty,” Livia said. “I approve.”

“Good,” Mulberry smiled.

“No matter what she wears, she’ll cause a stir,” Nick said. She glanced from her phone, and the heat in his eyes and her cheeks flamed.

His mom and sister talked about fashions and dresses, and Colette tentatively asked if Mulberry had worn that on a red carpet before.

“A couple of years ago, I wore it to Cannes,” she said.

Nick felt relief wash over him. So his sister did recognize Mulberry but didn’t make a big deal out of it.

“The whole night is going to be great!” Henri said. “Now, I need to go make sure of it.”

“Yes, we have lots to do,” his mother said. She got up from her chair and kissed Nick on the cheek.

“Bye, Maman.”

“I better go with them. It was good to meet you, Mulberry.”

“Bye! Nice meeting you,” Mulberry said.

Nick turned his chair, taking her hands in his.

“So that was a lot.”

“It was fine. For divorced parents, yours sure get along.”

Nick laughed. “Only because they want the business to succeed. It was dicey right after their divorce, and then Maman showed up at dad’s office one day and told him she would not let what she had built up for thirty years go away just because Henri couldn’t stay faithful. They’ve made great business partners ever since.”

“I guess it takes all kinds,” Mulberry said.

“It does. Any concerns about tomorrow?”

“No. Bringing me here today to see if it helps. Thanks.”

“It’s my job,” Nick shrugged. “Come on, you haven’t eaten anything” he pulled her chair back, and she walked beside him.
