“What did dad want?” Colette asked him on the way back to the table.

“To inform me that I’d be working at Laurent Industries.”

His sister placed a hand on his shoulder. “Sorry, Nick.”

“It’s all right, Colette. We knew this was coming.”

“It won’t be terrible. I’ll be there.”

“Working with you will make it better.”

“I’m going to take Mulberry shopping next week.”

“I think you’ll get along with her.”

And he wasn’t lying. Mulberry wasn’t as airless as he first thought.

“Phil is in the clutches of Miss. Grayson. I better go before she hits him for another donation to the firefighter’s association.”

“Phil can’t control the spending?”

The colour drained from his sister’s face. “No. He can’t.”

“Go give them heck, then.”

“I will.”

His sister squared her shoulders, marching across the room to her almost-husband.

Nick made his way back to his mother’s table.

“How’s it going?” He asked in Mulberry’s ear.

“I’m okay.”

The lights dimmed, and the band a starting a slow temp.

“Go on, you two,” Livia said.

“I owe you a dance, Maman.”

“It’s okay. I’ll go dance with Henri just to make Yvette squirm.”

Mulberry laughed.

“If I can’t be awful once in a while, what’s the point?” His mother grinned.

“Yes. Lovely to talk to you, Livia,” Mulberry said.

“We’ll talk again. Enjoy,” his Maman winked at him.

“May I have this dance?” Nick offered her arm.

Her eyebrows rose in surprise but the smile spreading across her face tugged at his heart. She gracefully took his arm, and they strode to the dance floor.

“Here we are on the dance floor again.”

“Yes. You don’t seem to hate it.”
