“Why?”

“Just his manner. He’s always been grumpy. I don’t know. Maybe three dominant guys are too much for me to handle.”

Nick snorted. He wouldn’t call those guys dominant; they had huge egos and easy smiles.

“I think you can handle more than give yourself credit for,” Nick said.

“I don’t know. I feel like such a mess.”

“But you’re putting yourself together. You have put yourself together after everything you’ve been through.”

Didn’t anyone tell her how strong she was?

“I guess. Everyone acts as if it was my fault, even though they try not to. I want this solved so I don’t have to ever deal with it again.”

“I know.”

And he couldn’t help it.

He laced her fingers through his. Mulberry looked down at their clasped hands, then back to him, her eyes wide.

He should remove his hand from hers, that look said she liked this, and he didn’t want to give her any ideas but left it there, their touch electric, walking back through the maze.

In the car, Mulberry kept yawning.

Nick flipped on the playlist. She didn’t seem to mind, sure she was going to take a nap in the car.

In the parking lot of the condo, Mulberry yawned.

“Sorry. I think I’m going to go to bed.”

“Are you okay?” Nick asked.

It wasn’t even nine o’clock. Mulberry was usually a night owl.

“Yeah, I’m just tired. Thanks for taking me to the cafe.”

“Your welcome, it was fun” Nick suddenly felt shy.

He came around and opened her door, and holding her hand felt natural and right. She leaned against him in the elevator, and he couldn’t help but run his fingers through her hair.

Once inside the condo, he went into the kitchen and started pulling out pans to make dinner.

“I think I’m just going to lie down.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah,” she glanced away from him.

Maybe it was the stress of the day getting to her.

Doing all these events in a row definitely could be draining.

“Okay. Night.”

She stood on her tiptoes, kissing his cheek. “Night.”
