I squeeze the steering wheel as anger boils through me. “Then, why were you putting up a fight?”

“I don’t know… I shouldn’t have. I just… I finally found you and… I wasn’t ready to let you go.”

“And I’m not ready to let you go,” I say as I yank the wheel to the right. The car skids around the corner and we race down a new street. “So, cut out all that deserving-to-die talk, okay?”

He looks at me for a long moment and then nods. “Okay.”

“Good,” I say as I turn back onto the highway and speed down it. “Now, let’s figure out where the hell we’re going.”

Chapter Five

Mindy

“Are you sure you know where you’re going?” he asks.

I give him a flirty look. “Are you doubting me?”

He puts his hands up. “Sorry, I just…” He looks out the window at all of the trees. We haven’t passed a building or any sign of humanity for about thirty minutes. It’s getting dark and we can’t see much more than what our headlights are lighting up. At least, I can’t. I’m not sure how much he can see with his shifter vision. “It looks like we’re lost.”

“We’re not lost,” I say in a confident voice.

Shit, I think we’re lost…

It’s been over two years since I was last here and I wasn’t the one driving. I was in the backseat with my friend Becca while Tory drove and Andrea gave directions.

Damn it, why didn’t I pay attention?

Oh yeah, we were playing trivia on Becca’s phone and I was busy kicking everyone’s ass.

“It’s at the top of the mountain?” Cain asks as the road gets steeper.

I look at my phone, but there’s no reception up here. There’s no reception in Cain’s car either. The screen keeps buffering.

“Yeah,” I say, hoping this is the right mountain.

I turn the steep corner and exhale in relief when I see the tiny observatory at the top.

“I knew it!” I say confidently, now that I know I was right.

“I’ll never doubt you again,” he says with a sexy smile. It sends tingles erupting along my skin.

“How do you know about this place?” he asks as he looks up at it.

“My friend Tory was an astronomy student, so she was allowed to use the powerful telescope in the observatory whenever she wanted.”

“Have you been here before?”

I nod. “She brought us up once and the four of us spent the night looking at stars, drinking wine, and gossiping. It was so fun.”

I gulp when I realize I’m going to be spending the night alone in that secluded observatory with Cain. I wonder what we’re going to do all night. Probably not drink wine and gossip…

“Do you have a key?” he asks as we get closer.

I shake my head. “You’re the clever, resourceful AFA agent. I’m getting us here. You’re breaking us in.”

He smiles and I can’t help but smile back. Something about teasing smiles out of this powerful man makes me all giddy every time I do it.

The parking lot is empty, which is pretty lucky. The last thing we need is someone asking us what we’re doing here and why our car is all busted up.

I park the car and look at the door. The observatory looks closed.

“This is perfect,” Cain says in a low voice as he looks around. “Great job.”

My insides light up, thrilled that I’m managing to please this man in any way.

“Does your grandfather know about this? Would he suspect that you’re here for any reason?”

“No,” I say. “I’ve never told him about it.”

He grins and my heart skips a beat. “Let’s go find a way in.”

I follow him out and we walk around the premises. He’s looking at the windows, the doors, looking for any cameras, any security, any weaknesses. I’m just looking at him.

He’s wearing that suit so well. It’s all ripped up and dirty from his little squirmish with the four shifters, but somehow, it still looks incredible on him.

His black tie is loose around his neck, the top button undone on his white shirt. I picture myself standing in front of him, fixing his tie, adjusting his collar, smelling his cologne, running my hands along his shoulders as I look up into his eyes, hoping he’ll kiss me. It gives me a deep shiver.

I can’t believe I’m going to be alone with this man. An excited thrill ripples through me. What’s going to happen? There are so many possibilities…

“Let’s check the back,” he says as he heads around the small stone building. My eyes are on his muscular back as I follow him.

I love the way his black jacket gets all tight on his biceps whenever he moves his arms. I love the broadness of his shoulders. I love the way his ass looks so hard and squeezable. There’s so much to look at. So much to admire.
