“My fucking arm!” he hollers as he looks at his mangled flesh in horror. “Fucking ostie d’ours!”

I’m losing a lot of blood fast. The wound is deep and the sword slashed through many arteries. I can feel my shifter healing working, but I’m not sure if it will be quick enough.

My bear stumbles back on woozy legs. Stars fill our vision.

Mindy runs over and wraps her arms around my bear’s head. “Leave him alone!” she screeches at The Foxhounds.

My bear is only looking at her. I might not survive this. My bear seems to know we might not have much time left and he’s taking our final minutes to admire his mate for the last time.

I can feel the love and adoration flowing through him. I’m feeling the same as we watch her crying. She’s so perfect. I just wish we had a bit more time to spend with her.

More blood pours out and it takes all of our energy with it. Blackness takes over and Mindy’s beautiful face goes dark.

Our legs wobble. We hit the ground. Our eyes fall closed.

The last thing we see is Mindy kneeling in front of us begging us to get up.

Then… darkness…

Chapter Ten

Mindy

“Step aside, lady,” Remy says as he stands over Cain’s bear. He’s gripping the bloody sword, hatred oozing from his bright green eyes.

“No!” I shout as I stretch out in front of my mate, desperate to protect him.

I’m panicking as I look back at him. He’s not waking up. Why isn’t he waking up?!

There’s so much blood everywhere. Aren’t shifters supposed to heal? Why isn’t he healing?

Tears fill my eyes. I feel dizzy. I feel like I’m going to be sick.

We just found each other. It can’t be over already.

Remy raises the sword into the air. He’s got the cold blank eyes of an executioner. The terrifying eyes of someone who’s given up their conscience a long time ago.

“You’re not hurting him!” I scream. “Do you know who my grandfather is?!”

Jackson nods sadly. “Your grandfather is the one who gave the order. It’s for the best, Mindy. You can never trust a feral bear.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about!” I shout as I kneel between the man I love and that deadly sword. “He’s changed. I saw it.”

Remy steps forward, ready to end the most important relationship in my life. I won’t let that happen. I’ll die before I let that happen.

His jaw tightens.

“No!” I scream as I rush forward and tackle his legs.

I’m not sure what I was expecting… That I’d be able to bring down a huge muscular wolf shifter with my tiny body?

Well, I don’t. I bounce back and land on my ass with a grunt. He stands over me gripping the sword and looking more determined than ever.

“Was dat supposed to stop me?” he asks with an amused grin. He’s looking at me like I’m a feisty bug in his path. Like he can squash me at any time he wants.

Fuck this guy.

I’ll squash him!

I yank my foot back and kick him as hard as I can right in the dick.

He makes a gurgling sound as his green eyes widen. He drops the sword and falls to his knees, gripping his balls while the vein in his temple pulses.

I quickly snatch the sword and stand up, daring any of these killers to try and touch my man.

Cain’s grizzly is still stirring on the ground and making the occasional whimper. I hope that his shifter healing is working its ass off right now. I have a lifetime to spend with this amazing man.

“Put the sword down,” Jackson says as the two other bear shifters circle me.

“I want to talk to my grandfather!” I shout as I swing the sword around, my eyes darting from one threat to another.

“Kill her!” Remy shouts as he grips his balls in agony. His face is bright red.

“No one is going to hurt you,” Jackson quickly says. “Your grandfather is on his way. He should be here any second.”

Several tense minutes pass. I want to tend to the wounded bear by my side, but I have to hold these murderers back. I feel like I’m suffocating every time I glance at Cain’s bear and realize that this might be the last time we’re together.

Another black car arrives in the distance. The tension increases as it speeds up the dirt road.

Remy is standing now, looking angrier than ever as he glares at me. I glare back at him.

I’m not going to be as thoughtful as Cain was, giving him back his sword. If he wants it back, he can pull it out of his stomach once I’m done with it.

The black car skids to a stop and my grandfather steps out with a few other agents.

I thought I’d feel relieved to see him, but I feel conflicted. I’m not sure who I can trust. I squeeze the sword as he rushes over.
