“I’ll be right back,” he says, giving me a dashing look before quickly stepping out of the car.

My mind isn’t working anymore. It’s spinning like crazy as I watch him hurry to the intersection.

This man is a whirlwind. He’s a wrecking ball colliding into my safe little life.

I watch in shock as he stands in the middle of the road, waiting for the other car to arrive. He’s wearing a black suit that hugs his muscular frame perfectly. His black tie hangs loose around his neck.

Even though I should hate him, I’m intrigued. I can’t stop staring at him.

He’s a wild crazy maniac, but he’s also gorgeous. Strong, capable, quick on his feet. None of the guys I’ve met at school are anything close to this man.

I wonder who he is. Why was he at my grandfather’s retirement party? Is he a spy for some rival organization? A criminal on the loose? An assassin? And what do any of those scenarios have to do with me? Why did he throw me over his shoulder and run off with me? Why not my cousin Sophie, or any of the other gorgeous women there?

All of these questions are swirling through my mind as the black car comes racing around the corner at a breakneck speed. It squeals to a stop in front of my mysterious captor.

Four men climb out. They’re all huge. They all look so mean. The one in the back has a freaking Samurai sword strapped to his back. He’s clutching his bloody arm as he glares at my kidnapper.

My stomach drops, but this time it’s not concern for me. It’s concern for him.

What are those guys going to do to him?

The window behind me is broken from the guy with blond hair slamming into it. The cubes of glass are strewn across the black leather seats. It allows me to hear what they’re saying.

“That’s Shields’ granddaughter you took,” the big one with the brown eyes says. I’ve seen him before at another work function with my grandfather. Jackson, I think it is? He’s some kind of team leader. “What are you trying to do, Cain?”

“Cain.”

I get a deep shiver as I whisper his name.

“I’m the new director,” Cain says with his hands on his hips. “I’m in charge of all of you.”

Jackson lets out a derisive laugh. “You can kiss that promotion goodbye. You’re hiding a feral bear, you attacked multiple agents during an AFA event, and you kidnapped the granddaughter of the freaking AFA director. There’s only one place you’re going and you know it.”

He’s hiding a feral bear? He’s a bear shifter?

A cold chill ripples through my body when I remember what the AFA is for. My grandfather always said that they protect the world by putting rabid feral shifters down…

They’re going to kill him?!

Oh shit… My hands start shaking.

I can’t let that happen. I don’t know why I want to protect the man who kidnapped me, but I do. I don’t want anything bad to happen to him.

“Let her go,” Jackson says. “She’s an innocent girl who doesn’t deserve to be wrapped up in this.”

“No,” he says with a fierceness in his tone that sends a flood of warmth blooming through me. “She’s mine.”

I swallow hard, knowing he’s right.

I don’t know why I feel that way or what any of this means, but I know that what he says is true. I’m his. I’m all his.

I can feel it in the way he looks at me. The ownership. The possessiveness. I can tell that he knows in his soul that I’m his and he will do anything to keep it that way.

“He’s lost his mind, mon ami,” the guy with the French accent says as he pulls out his sword. I suck in a nervous breath as he swings it through the air. That blade looks deadly sharp. “Let’s do our job, no?”

“Hold on,” Jackson says as he puts his big hand up. “What do you mean, she’s yours?”

“She’s my mate,” Cain says in a deep rumbling voice. He glances back at me through the window and the full extent of his desire, of his extreme need, of his intense possession slams into me with the force of a speeding train. I can’t breathe as those dark sexy eyes sear into my soul.

I know in this moment that it’s all true. I am his mate, he’s mine, and we belong together.

I don’t care if his bear is feral. I don’t care if he doesn’t have much time left. I’m going to take every second I can get with my mate.

And I’ll risk my life to protect those few precious moments just like I know he would too.

“Your mate?” Jackson says with a laugh. “Come on, Cain. We know you’re just trying to prolong the inevitable. Just because two shifters found their mates and got off, doesn’t mean we’re going to fall for this shit.”
