Chapter One

Xavier

"Have you made it to the house yet?" My twin brother, Tate, growls into the phone. "I'm running late."

"When are you not running late?" He's a pediatric heart surgeon. The man is always late. Not that I can blame him or anything. He's one of the best at saving lives. Parents from all over bring their kids to him for help.

I respect the hell out of him for what he does. God knows I couldn't do it. The thought of operating on kids makes my stomach twist itself up into knots. Not Tate, though. He was born for the job. No one fights harder to heal them. I'm proud of him.

"Man, fuck off with your bullshit," he grumbles. "Jules said I'm not allowed to leave until I do paperwork. She's pregnant and terrifying."

I pull to a stop behind a small Honda at the red light at the corner of Broadway and Broadus, chuckling. Jules Montgomery, the nurse who runs his office, is about five foot nothing. The only thing terrifying about her is her ability to see right through my brother's bullshit.

"I'm about ten minutes from the house," I say, trying to make sense of the bumper sticker on the back window of the Honda. I'm pretty sure it's written in Elvish or Klingon or one of the other fifty made-up languages Uncle Gray tried to teach us growing up. But that was a long time ago. I haven't had time for made-up languages and childish games in…years.

Shit, I haven't even seen Uncle Gray since Christmas two years ago, either. All I do is work.

"Samara and Scout are waiting for you."

"Where's Baby G?" I ask, referring to my six-month-old niece.

"Asleep. I swear to God, Xavier, if you wake her up, I'm killing you when I get home," Tate growls. "She never sleeps."

"I do what I want, fucker. In case you've forgotten, I've been in Japan for the last three months for work. I haven't seen my new niece since she was three months old," I remind him. "I didn't make the trip to see your ugly ass." That's only partially a lie, but he doesn't need to know it.

"She's teething, and Samara's exhausted."

"Fine, I'll let her sleep," I mutter, not telling him that I planned on it anyway. I may not know much about babies, but I know enough to know they get cranky when they're growing teeth. Even Scout gets grumpy, and she's always a happy little thing.

Cranky or not, I'm looking forward to spending time with my nieces. I haven't gotten to do nearly enough of that since Tate married Samara and adopted Scout, and then had the baby. Our mom retired at the beginning of the year, leaving her modeling agency to us. Since Tate has no interest in running it, the work falls to me and Sariah, our older sister. Sariah spends most of her time in Los Angeles, handling the day-to-day operations. I deal with our international operations and contracts. I'm rarely in the United States. Hell, I rarely spend more than a few months in the same place.

I don't regret what I do, don't get me wrong. Being able to keep my mom's company alive and thriving is incredible. Thanks to her work and our company, plus-size models are forces to be reckoned with in the fashion industry from Los Angeles to Paris and beyond.

But the constant traveling is getting old. I'm ready to stay in one place for a while and actually put down roots. I want to be part of my nieces' lives and not just the uncle who passes through every few months.

"You better," Tate warns. "Otherwise, your big ass is staying up with her tonight while my wife and I sleep."

"You mean while you fuck," I snort and then frown when the driver ahead of me suddenly throws the Honda into reverse. I grab for the steering wheel to hit the horn.

The car slams into me.

Metal strikes metal with an unmistakable crunch. Glass shatters. The truck barely even rocks side to side from the impact, but the Honda shakes like it just hit a speed bump at fifty miles an hour before settling.

"What the fuck?" I growl.

"Why does it sound like you just hit something?" Tate asks, suspicion in his voice.

"Uh, because a Honda just backed into me at a red light?"

"Are you sure you didn't hit it?" Tate asks.

I growl into the phone. "Can you just call the fucking sheriff and get him out here?"

"Fine. Is anyone hurt?"

"Doubt it. We're at a red light. The airbags didn't deploy." I pull to the side of the road and hit the button for my hazards, keeping one eye on the car in front of me as the driver navigates to the curb. "But I'm in a rental. I need a report, or they're charging me out of the ass for this shit."
