Bain growled in my ear, likely due to the fact that Braxton hadn’t tried to help even a little bit after we were divorced.

“I didn’t want anything about my new place to remind me of Braxton,” I said, trying to calm him. “He was my past, and I didn’t want anything from him. Not a dollar. Not a chair. Not our wedding photos that he refused to give me—not even the ones of only my parents and me. Not our tax records that he refused to let me help with. Not our last name. Nothing.”

He dropped his forehead to the back of my head and said quietly so that no one could hear him, “If I could kill him, I would.”

I snorted. “Killing him would be kind of bad on your conscience.”

“Killing him would be freeing of my soul, though,” he countered.

And he did have a point.

Kicking Braxton out of my life had been the best thing I’d ever done.

Killing him…

“I enjoy having you be a free man,” I teased, patting his shoulder.

“And I want grandkids sometime soon,” Hilary butted in. “So… no killing your brother.”

Surprisingly, we hadn’t been as quiet as we’d thought.

Whoops.

“Anyway.” Sunny sounded like he was trying hard not to smile. “That’s where we’re at now. Trying to find Telly.”

“Telly.” Bain frowned. “Is that your girlfriend?”

That last bit had been aimed at his brother.

“Yes,” he ground out, sounding piqued. “Which you would know had you cared anything about me at all.”

My alarm on my phone beeped, and I sighed. “I really have to go to work.”

There was an exchange among every single man that was there besides my ex.

I realized that I wouldn’t be alone for a while. Not with him having all of these motorcycle club brothers.

Son of a whore.

The stickers on the fruit at supermarkets are completely edible. Even the glue is edible.

BAIN

“Did you see where she went?” I asked as I watched the video feed again.

“Nope.” Kobe sighed as he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his pointer finger. “We’ve been at this for hours. I think what we need to do is get the contract pulled. You already have that investigations company a few towns over working on the money trail. What you need is to get a hacker to follow it. I think that’s the only logical next step.”

“I don’t know one of those,” I grumbled.

“I do,” Kobe said, “but let’s just say that he’s a little less legit than you probably would’ve liked. He’s just as likely to up the price on your “Luce’s” head than remove it altogether.”

“What kind of incentive does he need to work with me instead of against me?” I asked.

“The kind of incentive that I don’t know about,” Kobe answered. “He does what he wants and damn the consequences.”

“Sounds fantastic.” I leaned back in my chair.

We were at Kobe’s makeshift office, which happened to be in a really shitty motel on the bad side of town. Why he was working out of this particular hotel, I didn’t know. But it worked for him and I wasn’t one to question things when they were none of my business.

“Sounds like you got shit, and we need someone to help,” he countered. “Fantastic or bullshit, we got nothin’.”

It was true.

We’d spent the last three hours in his hotel room scouring through illegally and some legally obtained video footage of Telly’s whereabouts over the last few days. The moment the contract became live, Telly had disappeared, never to be seen again.

“She can’t be far,” I finally said. “And eventually, she’s going to have this baby and have to come out of hiding. She had no way to get out of town. No car. No cash to get a bus ticket. No video surveillance whatsoever on any of the exit points throughout town. She’s still here. We just have to wait her out.”

“In the meantime…” Kobe pulled out his phone and started texting. “I’ll text my person and we’ll go from there.”

With no other choice but to go with it, I gathered my shit and said, “I gotta go get her from work. There’s no telling how badly Cassius wants to pull his hair out.”

I’d already called into work today to go over surveillance with Kobe—which likely didn’t do me any favors thanks to not having officially started yet—tomorrow I had to start my job or I wouldn’t have one.

Luckily, today and tomorrow, Cassius had volunteered his time and services.

Then we’d have all weekend to hang out and do nothing.

Which led me to what I did next after exiting Kobe’s hotel room.

I called a friend that had a cabin out in the middle of nowhere.

It would be hot and humid and have a really secluded area surrounding the cabin that would allow us to be naked as much as possible for forty-eight hours.
