“No.”

I felt my eye twitch.

That poor, poor baby.

I just didn’t understand Braxton.

He was so selfish and disgusting.

“You’ll have to figure something else out then,” Sunny said. “Make plans with your parents to take care of this child. In the meantime, you’ll take the baby, because we don’t have anywhere else for it to go.”

I pulled my phone out and bit my lip, wondering who I should call.

I finally settled on Matilda.

She was probably freaking out anyway.

I’d had no less than ten calls from her in the last few days, all of which I’d said I’d return and didn’t.

“Listen,” I heard Sunny say. “I know this is hard for you but… you’re really walking away?”

Braxton didn’t say a word as I heard his loafers all but squeak off in the distance.

Only when I was sure he was gone did I poke my head out from the alcove I’d planted myself in.

“Sunny!” I whispered.

Sunny whipped around, frowned hard at me and my hiding spot, then smirked. “Hiding?”

“Sitting here like the nurse told me,” I admitted. “She said I could hear when they had any news on Bain.” I swallowed hard. “I’m going to try to get a hold of my in-laws. They’ll want to be here anyway. I just didn’t think there’d be any way to get a hold of them if I tried.”

I’d heard vaguely while things were going on with Bain in the ER that they’d been trying to get ahold of his parents and couldn’t. I wasn’t sure my calling them would help matters. So I hadn’t bothered trying.

But Matilda… she had connections that not even Sunny had.

I wasn’t exactly sure what Matilda’s dad did. Some sort of law enforcement, military-type stuff. Whatever it was, he scared the crap out of me. I’d met him multiple times over the years, and each time was still just as scary as the first.

“I’ve been trying, but from what I understand, they’re already on the boat and the boat’s been underway for a while.” He cursed. “We missed them every single fuckin’ time that we got close.”

I gave him a thumbs-up. “I’ll see if I can help. But is there any way to keep the baby admitted for a few days? Until we can figure all this out?” I paused. “If I had to suggest one thing and one thing only, it would be that Braxton not get any contact with that child. I know you think it’s the best right now since he’s the baby’s father but… that poor kid. I can’t imagine that things would go well with him raising him. Braxton is a piece of shit.”

“Piece of shit or not, the law says the baby goes to the father unless there are extenuating circumstances.” Sunny sounded upset.

“Shit,” I grumbled. “That’s no good.”

Sunny patted me on the shoulder. “Got an update. I’ve been looking for you to give it to you. Bain got both legs repaired and splinted. Now they’re working on the damage to his thoracic area.”

I winced.

I hadn’t heard that there was anything wrong with his chest area.

“Okay,” I said softly. “Will you update the guys?”

The guys being his club brothers.

“Already did. They’re looking for you, too. Want to keep you safe. But now that I know where you are, I’ll hole up in the waiting room and keep an eye out. There’s no entry in and out of this hallway except through the OR.” Sunny patted my shoulder. “He’s gonna be okay.”

Then, with that parting comment, I regained my seat.

Then called my best friend and told her everything.

CHAPTER 20

Six feet of dirt would look good on you.

-Bain to Braxton

BAIN

I only thought getting beaten up in prison to within an inch of my life would be the worst thing I’d ever experienced in my life.

Boy, was I wrong.

“…two broken femurs, both collarbones broken. He had two collapsed lungs. No brain issues, but he did have a questionable mark on his neck that caused us concern. Though, no issues were seen on any scans. Right now, we’re going to keep him sedated just so we can get his blood pressure under control.”

Sedated my ass.

I wasn’t sedated if I could hear and feel everything.

“I think he’s awake.”

The sweetest voice ever filled my ears.

I opened my eyes and found Luce’s bright ones staring right back.

“Hey, you,” I whispered softly. “You okay?”

Her hands went to either side of my cheeks and she leaned in close to get right up to my mouth. Then she kissed me.

Even broken and dying, I felt that kiss in my soul.

“You’re so worried about me when you should be worried about you,” she murmured softly.

I moved the small distance that separated us and kissed her mouth.

“I’ll live,” I murmured. “Make sure you stay near one of the guys. I don’t know whether or not you’re still…”

“Safe? In danger?” she teased.
