Fuck. I loved working with her but her knowing smirk made me want to slam the laptop closed.

“Alfred just texted me,” I said, getting straight to it.

“He texted me too,” Inferna said, pressing her lips into a thin line. She shook her head, grimacing. “I will personally be giving my uncle hell. For all of us.”

“Please do,” Anne hissed.

“What did your texts say?” I asked.

“What you would expect,” Inferna sighed. “We’re all going to die, Warts and Claws will end. Our loves will perish unless we deliver you with a little bow on your head to him.”

“He wanted a bow?” I scoffed.

“No, that was sarcasm, Alex,” Inferna said bluntly. “Still.”

I skipped a beat for a moment, taking a breath. Sarcasm went over my head a lot, and I blamed it on my age. “Mine basically said the same thing. He’s coming for me.”

“I think it would be good to move you,” Inferna said. “I can call my family. Hell, maybe you can stay with Lucifer.”

“No,” I said. “I don’t want others brought into this. But, I do think everyone should take the rest of the week off. Get out of the city even. I’ll pay for that, I don’t care. I just want everyone to get to safety.”

“No,” Inferna said. “Everyone has refused to leave.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I already thought of this,” she said, shrugging. “I offered to give everyone time off, to send everyone away. And every single witch and monster who has been involved in this declined. They will be here to help if needed, and stated that they would rather send Alfred back to hell than leave you alone.”

I was silent, her words settling in. I leaned back, not sure what to say.

Why would any of them be willing to help me? All of this was my fault. All of the danger, the pain, the suffering.

“Like it or not,” Inferna said, “you were responsible for some of this, but not all of this, Alex. You are a victim too. And like it or not, you are also part of the reason why I met my mates. Why the others met theirs. There has been good that has come out of this situation, not just bad, and quite frankly— not a single one of us would change how things have happened. I know that you want us gone, but we won’t leave.”

Tears blurred my vision and I was still at a loss for words.

“I don’t deserve that,” I whispered.

“Sure you do,” Inferna said. “Of course you do. For fuck’s sake. Do you really think we’d just let him take you?”

Anne’s hand gripped my thigh, giving me a gentle squeeze.

“No,” Anne said, looking at me. “We won’t. That won’t happen.”

“I just… he will go for Anne and Sylvia,” I said, looking from one to the other. “I don’t want either one of you to get hurt.”

“We might get hurt,” Sylvia said, shrugging. “But this isn’t my first time, Alex, and I have a reason not to let him win. I won’t give in like I did last time.”

“We will win,” Inferna said. “I am sure we will. His time is coming to an end all over again. But first, I need the three of you to go somewhere unless you are sure you aren’t being watched.”

“I will have to look,” I said, glancing at the windows. I felt a bolt of paranoia, but it was warranted.

Was the wolf already at my door or did we have more time?

Inferna nodded, leaning forward. “Let us know. Maybe have some sex first because you look like you’re running a fever.”

“Inferna,” I hissed.

She laughed, shrugging. “I’m an incubus and the boss.”
