“Pardon me, gentlemen,” Tabby sniffs, prying the Galloway brothers apart so she can get another look at me. She points out important landmarks on my body.

“Shiny hair. Glowing cheeks. Thickening waist. And of course, those tatas. And suddenly she likes strawberries? I thought you guys were supposed to be geniuses or something!”

There is no doubt in her mind, and I know it. Adding up all the signs…

“You know, I think you might be right,” I whisper.

“Are you serious?” Cal asks.

“Are you sure?” Irving asks.

“Well, there is an easy way to tell,” I reply simply. “But something tells me we already know the results of any pregnancy test.”

“Yeah you do,” Tabby interrupts emphatically. “You don’t need a pregnancy test to tell you what I can already see. You guys are having a baby!”

Cal and Irving draw away, their eyes locked together. Fear grips me. We have never talked about this. Of course it was possible, because we understand biology and we have sex almost every day. But we never talked about this. And now… Am I going to lose them?

My mouth goes dry as they hold a secret, psychic conference of some kind. Nervously I find Tabby’s hand and squeeze her fingers.

“Everybody! I’d like your attention!” Cal bellows, his voice causing everyone in the room to gather nearer.

My heart races. Tabby squeezes my hand reassuringly.

“Hello? Warren? Can we get your attention over here?” Irving calls out, directing Warren Buffett to turn our way.

“You guys? We could do this privately,” I suggest. “Really. I could just take the next plane back to Miami. No fuss. Let’s just—”

“First, I would like to thank you all for coming!” Cal continues. “It’s been a very exciting project. Welcome to Keywinds!”

The party guests clap politely, eagerly pressing forward to hear more. I know some of them are hopeful to become late investors, or to secure their slots for our companion property in the Baltic Sea.

“We called you all here to invite you to take a closer look at our technology and innovations,” Irving interjects. “And to give you the surprise announcement that the United States State Department has declared this property officially unclaimed. We are sovereign!”

A roar of approval goes up. I look at Irving in shock. This is a surprise. He smirks at me.

“So you know what that means,” he smiles.

“It’s a completely anonymous tax haven? Not subject to the laws of any one country?”

“That’s the general idea, yes,” Cal also smiles.

I look at both of them, trying to read their minds. Whatever they are thinking, I can’t get it. I don’t need a tax haven. I barely have any money at all. I’m not even sure if I am still working for somebody or anything. I sort of forgot to ask.

In unison, they both drop to their knees in front of me. I catch my breath.

“Guys? What—”

Irving takes my hand and holds it in both of his. Cal does the same thing. They both smile up at me, clever and confident.

“So you should marry us,” Cal grins.

“What he means is, Opal Curie, will you marry us?”

“Marry you? And you? Marry… both of you?”

“Sovereign island state,” Cal shrugs, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

“But is that even… Is that legal?” I sputter incredulously.
