Spencer, Trevor, and I crowd around behind her, ready to carry her out of here in an instant.

“Jenna?” Lindy whispers hoarsely.

Jenna stands awkwardly on Seattle’s bed in the corner. Her eyes dart among us as she calculates the weight of the situation. In one hand, she holds a metal plate and screwdriver. In the other hand, she holds a palm-sized device.

“Jenna, what is that?” Lindy says with more courage.

Jenna sets her jaw and steps down off the bed. Planting her feet shoulder-width apart, she almost looks ready for a fistfight.

“Jenna, is that a camera?”

Jenna’s lips disappear into a thin line. Her nostrils flare with every breath.

“That’s a camera,” I confirm quietly.

Lindy takes a step forward, her hands drifting out from her sides.

“Are you…Youdid this? To me?How could you?”

Jenna takes several breaths, then shakes her head and stares at the ceiling.

“Well, I couldn’t just leave it here,” she chuckles ruefully. “I figured you would find it when you started moving your stuff.”

The guys and I stay just behind Lindy, giving her a few inches of space. Hopefully she can feel we are here for her. For whatever she needs.

“But there are… I mean… The whole time?” Lindy asks incredulously.

I can hear the heartbreak in her voice. I can hear how she is fitting all the pieces together, reviewing her life with Jenna since she got here and seeing it through new eyes.

“How did you—”

“Come on, Lindy,” Jenna says. “It’s just a thing. I found out I was on it when I was a freshman. No big deal.”

“Then why didn’t you do something about it? Why didn’t you stop it!” Lindy yells.

“I just happened to take a class with those guys,” she shrugs. “You can’t beat ‘em, so I thought I would join them.”

“That is so fucked up.”

“It’s a job, Lindy,” Jenna scowls. “It’s just college. It’s not like real life.”

“It’smyreal life!” Lindy yells, finally raising her voice.

The women face off, staring at each other. I can feel that they are saying a million things to each other they don’t want to say out loud. Accusations, confessions… It’s like watching an explosion in slow-motion. Everybody’s life is changing right in front of our eyes.

Spencer steps away, and the women are still staring at each other when campus police arrive. Jenna has the balls to look surprised to see them.

The officers shoulder their way into the room and assess the situation immediately.

“Don’t do this,” Jenna pleads. “I’m a senior. I’ll get kicked out. Everything will be for nothing.”

Lindy crosses her arms, clenching her jaw rhythmically as she breathes as calmly as she can.

“It’s just college,” she snarls. “It’s not like real life, Jenna.”
