“I’ll get us another drink,” Sophie calls over the music.

I give her a nod because there’s no point trying to project my voice over this sound. I shimmy up against Jared as we dance to Tay Tay, shaking our asses with our hands high in the air. Sophie returns with a bottle of vodka, and we begin taking shots, making our night that much more exciting.

“Get the boys,” Jared smirks, momentarily forgetting that his boyfriend is around here somewhere. “I want to dance up against Tank and Miller like a Dragon sandwich.”

Sophie laughs. “Oh, hell yeah. I want to be a part of that sandwich too.”

“Me too,” I slur, feeling the room start to spin. “I want a Miller sandwich.”

Together, we head for the back door, giggling as the three of us attempt to get through the door frame at the same time and fail miserably. I know without a doubt my shoulder is going to be bruised in the morning, but right now, the only thing that matters to me is getting Miller back in my arms and maybe in my bed.

“Shit,” Jared mutters as he looks out toward the backyard, his body stiffening as his tone drops.

When Sophie gasps, I look up to see what has their attention. “God, I’m going to kick his ass,” she snaps.

My eyes land on Miller and more importantly, the beautiful girl snuggled in on his lap. His hand is curled around her waist as he looks at her with such adoration that it makes me feel like I’m intruding. The way they are with each other, it’s clear they’ve meant something to each other for a long time. Which makes me nothing but a fool.

Fuck me.

My heart sinks. I knew it was too good to be true. It was all a game to him. A game that he has clearly grown bored of.

Sophie grabs me by the hand and pulls me back into the house with Jared following behind. Without a backward glance, we head straight for the front door and leave the Dragons behind. “You okay, babe?” Sophie asks, slipping her hand into mine and holding me close as I feel my world starting to crumble.

“No,” I tell her, feeling empty inside. “I really liked that one.”

“I know,” she sighs, her heart breaking right along with mine.

“I’d kick his ass if it wasn’t so likely he’d snap me like a twig,” Jared says as he pulls me against him.

Words escape me as we make our way home, dragging my feet like the pathetic fool I am. “Well, doing the rest of the assignment is going to be a tad awkward now,” Sophie murmurs as we push our way through the door.

Crap. I didn’t even think about that. I groan as I stumble down the hallway and into my room. I find my pajamas then head into the bathroom and strip out of my clothes for a hot shower. Sophie makes her way into the bathroom and begins brushing her teeth as I step into the hot water. “What are you going to do about your date tomorrow night?” she asks.

“I think his ego could stand getting knocked down a few steps. Maybe he’ll even get stood up for the first time in his life,” I say, getting an odd satisfaction out of the thought, although it doesn’t take long for that satisfaction to disappear as the hurt takes over once again.

I finish up in the shower and head back to my room. After snuggling into my bed, I pull the blankets right up, and as I go to plug my phone into the charger, I notice a text message from the douchebag himself.

Miller - You keep disappearing on me. Hope you’re okay.

My chest aches at his words, and I consider replying, despite knowing I should just forget about him.

Dani - Wasn’t feeling well. Jared and Sophie took me home. Not sure tomorrow night is such a great idea.

Delete.

Damn it, the fucker can just work it out himself.

And with that, I turn my phone off and crash back onto my pillow, tears in my eyes and a heart aching to be loved.

It’sbarelysixinthe morning when I wake from the shittiest sleep known to man, and desperately needing to clear my head, I take myself for a run. After pulling on my shorts and training crop, I throw my hair up and head out the door.

A new day, a new me. No more Miller Cain weighing me down.

I head out into the early morning breeze and run until my lungs give out. Not even realizing I’ve made my way down his street, my eyes bug out of my head when I find myself right in front of his house as the front door opens. Panic tears through me, and I search for somewhere to hide, but when a person who clearly isn’t Miller appears in the doorway, relief pounds through my veins.

That relief quickly morphs into devastation as I realize it’s the girl from last night. That prick took her home. Just perfect. I bet she was an easy fuck. She probably spread her legs in seconds for the King of the Dragons.

“Hurry up, Mills,” she calls, not realizing that the runner out on the street is falling to pieces. “You promised me a breakfast date.”
