When I return inside, I find a huge, sexy alien warrior sitting at the kitchen table gazing at me with heat in his red eyes. That exquisite chest is bare and he’s barefoot but he’s wearing dark pajama pants.

And he’s holding my cat in his lap.

Demon snuggles in tight and allows him to pet her. I cannot believe this traitor. My baby doesn’t like anyone but me, that’s why we normally get along so well. “Watch out. She’ll demand you pet her all day long. Sometimes she forgets that we’ve got other things to do.”

His gaze drops to my bare legs then back to my chest. “My shirt looks good on you.”

Suddenly I remember I’m totally naked underneath. I pull down the hem which hits mid-thigh. The silky, long-sleeved shirt is entirely black, with a large symbol on the front of a gleaming white skull sporting large blood-stained tusks. “I like it.”

“It’s my battle garb.”

“Huh.”

“I made Traq for the both of us.”

“Traq?”

He lifts the steaming mug next to him. “It’s a morning drink most beings in the four sectors highly enjoy. You should try it.”

I walk over to a machine that looks similar to a coffee maker and pour myself some of this alien concoction. I give it a taste. “Hmm, good.”

“What does this cat eat? Is it hungry?”

“Oh, I already fed her, but she does enjoys shredded salmon in gravy. I usually hide her medicine inside her favorite foods, although lately she’s on a strict and boring diet.”

“Medicine? Why?”

“She’s an old lady cat with many ailments. As you can see, she recently had surgery but is recovering nicely. But Demon is sixteen years old and I must be gentle with her. That’s why I had to make sure she was cared for last night and this morning.”

“You care deeply for this animal?” he questions.

I shrug and lean against the kitchen island.

He takes a sip of his Traq and continues to pet my beloved cat. He doesn’t seem to mind that she drools on his claws and bites his hand. “I have an understanding of your bond with this creature. I had a beast I grew up with back on Voltare. Charger was my companion for twenty years and fought alongside me for countless battles, both real and simulated, until he passed away comfortably one night in his sleep. Due to his med lab sessions, I was able to extend his lifespan three times the normal length and keep him comfortable right up until the end, when his heart finally stopped, and he died of old age.”

I move closer. “There’s a lot of buzz about med labs one day possibly becoming mass produced for humans here on Earth. I didn’t know they could also heal animals.”

“On Voltare our med labs heal many common animals as well as Voltare citizens. Doctors who work extensively with animals in the wild have portable med labs designed entirely for those beasts. I have my mobile med lab on my hovercraft which contains additional programming for a variety of Voltare pets.”

I blink and sit down heavily in a chair next to him. “Your med lab only heals Voltare pets, not human animals?”

He tilts his head and continues to pet Demon and then looks back at me. “My med lab is not yet programmed to heal earth animals. It barely has a database for humans. I will work on updating the med lab though to see if it can include both you and this animal.”

“Don’t tease me,” I grit.

“I would never make a promise I can’t keep. It might take a while, but I will let you know when it’s ready.”

I give a curt nod and turn around in my seat, trying to hide the sting in my eyes and the lump in my throat. It’s a maybe. Only a maybe. He’ll do what he can to help Demon, but it’s nothing to count on.

Suddenly there’s a ping on my cell phone.

“Who is that?” my new husband growls.

I pick it up and swipe open the text and roll my eyes. “Nothing.”

He crooks an eyebrow.

I give the cell phone over to him so he can see for himself because I have nothing to hide. Well, except my plans for Ezra Wilson’s demise, but none of that is on my main phone. I used a burner to communicate my plans with the mercenaries and I tossed that in the trash before entering the auction house.
