“It’s possible. My mother is indeed a good catch. He’s lucky to have her.”

My female does not have all the evidence she thinks she does. I will wait to execute her stepfather until I can ascertain for myself his culpability or innocence.

And then a dark luxury vehicle pulls up onto our drive. Posey and I walk out front to greet our visitors. Her mother looks similar to my own female, but older and with shorter hair in a lighter color. They both appear to enjoy wearing the color black. A large, older male with dark hair with a touch of gray steps out of the car and walks next to the female, his hand on her back.

“Posey,” the mother yells out. She runs up to my female and Posey puts up with a quick hug.

“Hello mother, it’s good to see you.” Posey glares at her stepfather and then pointedly ignores him. “Mother this is my new husband, Waylen Tusk. Waylen, this is my mother Desdemona Wilson.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” her mother sputters as she reaches out to shake my hand. “I still cannot believe you two married so quickly. How did you two even meet?”

“Yes,” the stepfather walks up, “I want to know how you met too.”

“We met when I went to a secret auction to sell my virginity to the highest bidder,” Posey boldly proclaims. “Waylen bought me with the winning bid—twenty million dollars. My payout was one million dollars.”

“You sold yourself at auction?” her mother cries out. “Posey, why would you do that?”

“Because I needed the money to care for Demon.”

“What is wrong with Demon Spawn?”

“You didn’t know that she’s been very sick because I didn’t want to upset you, but she’s had surgery and treatment for cancer. And she had kidney disease as well as arthritis. I’ve been paying for her expensive and experimental treatments. She needed all of these to save her life , but then I was cut off from my funds.”

Desdemona cuts a disapproving glance toward her husband.

Posey steps forward and grabs her mother’s hand. “Mom, I also needed money to continue with the private investigator I had watching Ezra and the mercenaries I hired to protect you fromhim.” She points at her stepfather.

Her mother lets out a snort of disbelief. “Why on Earth would you need to hire anyone to protect me from my own husband?”

“Mom, I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Ezra killed my father and was drugging you to stay with him. I had to care for you as well as Demon.”

Her face softens. “You went to that terrible auction in order to care for me and your cat?”

My female frowns. “I went to that auction to raise funds to wreak retribution on my enemy, Ezra Wilson.”

“Uh huh.” Her mother sighs and turns toward her husband. “Ezra, you didn’t. You cut her money off, even after we decided to wait?”

The evil stepfather has the grace to look bashful. “I did. Des, I know you didn’t want me to cut her off just yet, but she had to grow up and learn to fend for herself. She’s got her scholarship, she didn’t need extra money on top of that. You were spoiling her.”

“I thought we agreed to talk to her about it first and then wait until she actually graduated and got her first real job.”

He throws his hands up in disgust. “She wants to be an author. What kind of career path is that? She’s going to amount to nothing if she doesn’t wake up now and make real plans for her future.”

“Wait, you two cut me off on purpose without warning,” Posey snarls, “to teach me a lesson…and Mom, you knew about it?”

“Well, I thought it was happening later, but yes, I knew about it. I didn’t agree to it happening out of the blue. Ezra, what were you thinking? This could have been disastrous for my daughter.”

“Mom, itwasdisastrous.”

“She’s my daughter now too. And look”—the human male points at the lodge and then at me—“it all worked out fine. She did end up having to think on her own and she immediately found a new income stream for herself.”

“Ezra,” Desdemona jabs a finger in her husband’s chest, “ourdaughter was so desperate for money she sold her virginity to the highest bidder at a secret auction. And you left that fake file out on your desk for anyone to find? Posey found it and now she really believes you killed Gavin. That’s terrible. Think of how much that must’ve harmed her, thinking Gavin’s best friend had arranged his death.”

“I left it out for that murder mystery party you were planning. You were the one who had it made.”

Posey turns away in disgust from her parents, leaving them to argue amongst themselves. She strides straight for me.

I put my arms around her and kiss the top of her head. “The good news,” I murmur, “is that your stepfather didn’t actually kill your father and he’s not drugging your mother into compliance. They appear to be truly mated and want the best for you, no matter how misguided. You’ll need to immediately deactivate that investigator and those mercenaries.”
