His eyes widen with a twitch.

Already, the effects of the pills start to take hold of him. I don’t say anything else for the next couple minutes while it courses through his blood stream. The mixture will have him suspended in delirium for a few hours, but I really only need the answer to one question.

“Why did you come here?”

His eyes have fallen out of focus. A loopy smile twists his lips.

“To finish what the fucking Chancellor couldn’t finish,” he slurs.

I quirk an eyebrow, my hands tightening around the hilt of my knife. Thank god Alexander isn’t here. I’m sure he would impale Keller the moment he heard this. “You were going to kill her?”

“Push her from the window.” He laughs but it’s more like a gurgle. “Isn’t she suicidal? Everyone would think she jumped.”

The little fun I was having burns from my consciousness with his words. So, he knows about Alize’s anxiety—and wants to use it against her like that? Keller is more than low, he’s literal scum. And the smug look on his fucking face? It just underscores how vile he is, that even drugged up with his inhibitions gone he’s still so…despicable.

One more question and I can have my fun.

“Why tonight?” I whisper.

“Alexander is in Italy,” he laughs. “It’s the perfect time.”

Ah, so he knew he would be away.

That’s strange, since I’m certain Alexander told nobody but Vance and I. As a matter of fact, neitherof us knew exactly where he would be. This piece of information will be helpful.

“How did you know?”

He grins then spits on me. The sticky glob lands on my cheek, and my stomach roils.

There’s little I hate more than when people disrespect me like this. I feel the anger thrumming through my veins, as the past comes rushing to mind. I should stay on task, focus on getting the truth out of him like Alexander would want—but the demons that have haunted me the past two years want their pound of flesh.

I take a step toward him.

“Keller, you remember the video you sent me a couple years ago?” My voice is a sinister whisper. “You were fucking Harlow, my whore of an ex-girlfriend. Well, she was my girlfriend at the time.”

Her name jogs his memory. I want to slice his lips through and cut the ridiculous smile from his face. “Yeah. The pussy was mid, but her head game was immaculate.”

I grind my teeth.

“Good, I’m glad you remember.” I’m hovering over him now, and his eyes finally move to the blade in my hand. “The video was seven minutes and forty-seven seconds long. That’s four-hundred-and-sixty-seven seconds.” I suck in a breath that quells the fire simmering in my bones.

“What the fuck does that have to do with anything?” he asks.

I laugh, and it echoes in the empty, dimly lit room.

“I’m just telling you so you can keep count,” I say, plunging the knife into his shoulder. “That’sone.”

Keller screams in pain, and it’s like music to my ears.

My writer’s block will be gone after this.

TWENTY-SEVEN

ALEXANDER

Though Lev offeredme the opportunity to spend a couple days on his megayacht, I left as quickly as I could. A single night was enough. I told him I had Kingmaker business to attend to. It was a lie.

The truth is I haven’t been able to get Alize off my mind.
