It didn’t look like a good time for her.

I’m doing her a favor.

Five minutes later, Tara joins me in the hallway, obviously annoyed. I’m not surprised she came out alone—Vico doesn’t have the balls to stand up to me, even though I literally just robbed him of a nut. Absolutely pathetic.

There’s a little bit of thrill in discovering that he’s probably scared of me.

Theyallprobably are.

It’s why they had to join forces to even have a shot at taking me down.

“Have you lost your fucking mind?” she shouts. “Where do you even get off, thinking that you can just barge in,unannouncedlike that?”

I chuckle. “Next time, lock the door,” I say. “Or better yet, stop fucking little boys who can’t keep their mouths shut about it.”

That gives her pause. I may have embellished the truth a little. There’s a whole list of reasons why she needs to drop Vico, but this might be the one that gets her to actually do it. I see the gears turning behind her eyes.

“What do you want?”

Instead of responding to her right then, I move our conversation to one of the enclaves at the end of the hall. It’s little more than a small sitting room, but will give us enough privacy for me to make my request. Tara reticently sinks into the loveseat beside me.

It’s late enough that I don’t expect anyone to be lingering around this part of the dorms.

“I need you to find something out for me,” I say.

Her eyes narrow. “I swear to god, if this is about me ratting out Alize, I—”

“No, I know it isn’t you,” I say. “I have an idea of who it is, but I just want to be sure before I make my next move.” I watch her carefully. “That’s where you come in.”

That only makes herslightlyless defensive. At least she’s willing to hear me out. I continue. “I need you to find outwhatevidence the person who grassed up Alize had. For the Executive Body to have believed the person so readily, they had to have some show them something.” I’m hoping it’s evidence that I can trace back to Cassidy and her snooping.

Tara quirks an eyebrow. “And how the hell am I going to help you with that?”

“Holmes and Dr. Martin are close friends, aren’t they?”

There’s a brief flash of something in her eyes, but it disappears so quickly that I can’t even be sure of what I saw. Save for the flickering incandescent sconces overhead, there’s hardly any light in this ancient room.

“Again, what does that have to do with me?”

I run a hand through my hair, releasing a sigh of frustration.

“Can’t you see that we’re not together anymore?”

That’s news to me.

I thought they had either shifted into a weird, open relationship, or Tara was cheating on him, actually. Neither of those things are my business. But if they’re over, I’m confused.

Holmes doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would let anyone go, much less the girl he literally risked his reputation for. If the whole school finding out about their relationship wasn’t enough to end it, then what the fuck was?

“Is that why you’re fucking all these teenagers?” I say with a chuckle. “You want to be the one dominating now?”

She doesn’t think that’s as funny as I do.

Tara moves to slap me across the face, but I grab her wrist. We’re locked in a tense stare-off for a few moments, then she’s getting up, wrestling her hand out of my grip. I let her go, but grab her shoulder before she can disappear down the hallway.

She turns to me with fire in her eyes. “Fuck off, Alexander. Seriously.”

I suppress the urge to laugh. She doesn’t know that I’ve had a knife stuck in me by the woman I love and spent hours thinking I had lost her forever. As ifanythingshe says or does can deter me right now.
