I’ll show him.

I tighten my grip on the hilt of the knife. His eyes track my movement, but I don’t care. I lunge after him again, this time aiming for his neck. Alexander catches my wrist.

“Once is fucking enough.”

It must be the grogginess of being startled awake, but he makes a few deft movements with his hand, and then the knife is in his. Alexander wraps a strong arm around my waist, then moves the knife to my neck. The sharp blade bites my skin, and my eyes widen.

Fuck.

“This is a surprise,” he says. There’s affection in his eyes. My stomach roils, even as the heat between my legs turns into an inferno. I hate him for looking at me like he loves me when I just stabbed him and he’s holding a knife to my neck.

Now that he’s shifted us, he’s pinned my hips with his. He’sdefinitelyturned on—his hard length is against my belly just like it was in the dream. My throat is dry, wetness gathering in my center.

“Life is full of surprises,” I spit, trying to find all the vitriol I can muster.

He hurt you.

He almost got you killed.

He’s taking your freedom the same way your father did.

He doesn’t love you.

The rage kindles, but it doesn’t have the bite that I hoped. Instead, it’s almost as if it’s fueling the lust taking me over too. The line between anger and desire blurs. Pain blooms by my neck where he has the knife.

“If you’re going to kill me, just get it over with.”

A deep throaty chuckle fills the room. It reverberates through my body, right to my slick folds. My thighs are coated in my juices, even through my underwear.

It’s the dream. It’s not because of…this.

“Kill you?” he whispers, bringing his face so close we’re sharing the same breath. “Does the thought of that scare you?” His breath falls over my bare skin, tingling. “Or does the danger excite you?” Alexander’s coarse voice crawls along my neck, leaving goosebumps in its wake. “I know you fucking love it when I hurt you.”

I close my eyes for a long second, trying hard to resist the stirring in my abdomen at his words. There’s an invisible magnetic pull between us, and it’s taking all my self-control not to melt into the wave of feelings building inside me.

Remember what he did to you.

I jut my chin out. “If I had known it was you, I would have stabbed you harder.”

“I don’t doubt it, beautiful.”

He’s grinning like a maniac, his teeth glistening in the dull light. The blood is still pouring from his chest, like tears streaming down his chiseled abdomen. I’m certain it’s dripping on me too, but the thought isn’t as offensive as it should be.

If anything, it turns me on a little to see Alexander bleed.

He’s been such an impenetrable fixture in my life ever since I got here. Always strong. Always capable. Always the one doing the hurting. Now I’ve drawn blood from him, the playing field doesn’t seem as uneven.

I should stab him more.

His tongue darts out to lick his lips. “This is turning you on, isn’t it?”

My cheeks heat up. “No. You’re fucking crazy,” I say with trembling lips.

But I responded too quickly. Alexander grins, another chuckle filling the closing space between us. He moves to grab my neck—harshly enough to limit my breathing.

He trails the knife down my neck toward the valley of my breasts.

My heart is a drum beat. My palms grow clammy.
