A second later, a voice comes from inside the cabin.

"We can't, sir," the person shouts back. "We are unable to get clearance from air traffic control, and there’s a fuel truck blocking our path on the runway."

I hit my head on one of the steps but hold on to the railing for dear life.

It sounds like there's a snag in my father's plans.

We struggle some more.

I'm out of breath. My arms burn. I'm running solely on adrenaline at this point. I'm desperate to survive. We're almost at the top of the stairs now, the whirring of the jet's idle engines finally bleeding into my consciousness.

The door leading into the cabin is a black hole, threatening to swallow me forever. My life ends the moment I get through those doors.

No. I can't let that happen.

"Stop right there!"

At first, I think I'm hallucinating, because it sounds so much like...

I turn to look at the tarmac below us.

Alexander.

Alexander's standing at the foot of the stairs, his gun drawn. Wesley's with him, and this other guy I don't know.

He came.

I barely have time to process my happiness, for my father grabs me and holds me against his chest. He draws his own weapon a moment after.

"Don't come any closer!" Michel shouts back.

He's using me as a shield.

THIRTY-NINE

ALEXANDER

Relief.

That's the first thing I feel.

Alize is still alive.

She's broken and bruised.

But she's alive.

The only thing standing between us is her fucking father, and I'm certain he knows I have no qualms about killing him. It's why he's trying to use Alize as a shield. She's his only ticket to make it out of this alive.

It's cowardly.

But it's what I expect from a man like him.

I have no doubt my father would do the same thing, given the chance.

Alize looks shaken, but not scared. She seems just as relieved as I am to see her after the whirlwind events of the past day. I missed her so much...

"Give it up, Michel!" I shout. "That plane isn't taking off with Alize on board."
