For times like this.

“What happened to talking things out?” she asks, her voice cracking in the middle of her sentence. “After what happened the last time, I thought we agreed to talk things out before it got to this point.”

A mirthless chuckle escapes me. She’s pointing a gun at me, but she wants to talk? Cute. When I said all those things, it was when I thought the biggest issue that could come between us was our own mistakes. But this, this is bigger than anything I could have possibly imagined.

But if she wants to talk.

“We can talk,” I hiss. “Start by telling me why you’re pointing a gun at me because I want to see what’s in your phone.”

“It’smyphone,” she says through gritted teeth. “I’m not giving it to you when you won’t tell me why you need to see it in the first place.”

A warbled bark of laughter escapes me. So she’s a fucking comedian too.

“When have I ever needed to explain myself to you?”

She looks at me confused, her lips curling into a frown. There’s disbelief in her eyes, like she can’t believe what I’m saying to her. “What do you think you’ll find in my phone?”

I narrow my eyes, watching as her throat bobs when she swallows. It makes me wonder how far this goes. How much of all this she really knows. If she lied to me about her father’s identity, then she’s protecting him.

And if she’s protecting him, then…

“You’ve been talking to your father behind my back,” I say, and the surprise that crosses her features is priceless. She recovers quickly, but I’ve already seen the chink in her armor. “That’swhy you don’t want me to see what’s in your phone.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Wrong answer, sweetheart.”

TWENTY

ALIZE

Everything is movingin slow motion.

I’m aiming a gun at the father of my child. Alex has done a complete 180—and it’s not getting any clearer what this whole situation is about. At first, I thought he was pissed because he found out I was pregnant and didn’t tell him.

How long would the family doctor keep that a secret anyway?

But then he started demanding to see my phone.

Now he’s talking about my father. None of it makes any sense. I swallow thickly, perspiration gathering on my palms as I try to hold the gun steady. Did Ezra finally tell him about the conversation I had while he was away?

“You lied to me,” Alexander says. The words shoot from his mouth and hit me in the face like a punch. “When I asked you what your father’s name was, you lied to me.”

My mouth goes dry. I can’t even bring myself to tell him I didn’t actually lie because it’s clear he knows I gave him my father’s middle name, not his first. My hands shake even more, and I start to look around for an exit.

But the doors are all locked, and he’s got the key fob on his side of the car. I might have a gun, but so does he. Plus, we’re on his family’s estate. There’s nowhere for me to run to, and the man I love doesn’t seem to love me anymore.

“It’s his middle name.”

“Oh I fucking know, Alize.” Alexander snaps, adjusting himself in the seat so that his body is angled more toward me. “Is that why you don’t want me to see your phone? Because you’ve been talking to him?”

Fuuuuck.

How did this all end up happening?

Everything feels like it’s spiraled out of control. The small spot of solace I found with Alexander is disintegrating, burned up by his rage. His question feels like a trap—I can’t say yes, but I also can’t lie.

Lying is only going to make it worse.
