“Precisely,” she said and breathed easier when he dropped it.

The moment they got back to her house she tossed her purse onto the table and slipped off her heels before marching upstairs, slamming the door shut in his face.

He slowly opened it as he loosened his tie and stared at her. “I take it you’re not too happy with me?”

“You take it right,” she said reaching for the zipper of her dress. “God, you just couldn’t leave it alone, could you? Why would you bring Walker into this?”

“I didn’t realize you and he had dated. I called to see if they could help to help you and your friends. I wasn’t expecting to discover you dated their star player.”

“You should have asked first Jake. There’s a reason I didn’t suggest them when I mentioned this whole thing. I know I could have called Walker and gotten the entire team on board, but I don’t want to hurt him any more than I already have.”

“You didn’t seem worried about any of the others.”

“Walker is the closest thing I’ve had to a relationship in years.”

“Until this—us?”

“This isn’t a relationship; this is sex plain and simple. You’re still leaving, and I highly doubt if your coach would be thrilled with you flying all the way across the country twice a week to come out and sleep with me. Sono, this isn’t a relationship.”

“Why don’t you want to admit it, Cee?”

“Because it isn’t real! It’sneverbeen real.”

“That’s a lie baby. Everything between us was real, everything,” he argued pulling her into his arms kissing her into silence.

“It’s just sex Jake, outside of the bedroom we’re on opposite sides of everything.”

“How?”

“You live in the spotlight; you clamor for it while I hate it.”

“This again? I get it; your brains have been glossed over before because of the way you look butInever was one of them. I was attracted to your brains, the way you’d be staring out the window in class and then know the answer to the questions, and then your stunning beauty. I wanted you for forever Cee, the only reason I didn’t show was because I knew I couldn’t have both you and football.”

“And you chose it over me.”

“I did it for you. We would have been miserable if I’d gone through with it that way. I would have resented giving it up and you wouldn’t have liked the new me.”

“That’s where you’re wrong Jake. I would have loved the man, who putmefirst, but you couldn’t then and you sure as hell won’t be able to do it now. ‘The Jet’ has way too many fans to disappoint.”

“Cee…”

“No, go to the hotel tonight. I want to be left alone.”

“Baby…”

“Go,” she told him as she walked into the bathroom and locked the door. How was she going to get through this without her heart being crushed again? She wanted him to choose her so badly, to love her more than that stupid game but he didn’t, and he never would.

Jake stared at the door and cursed his want to help her more. If he hadn’t called the baseball team, they wouldn’t have fought over all of this, and he wouldn’t be facing a night alone. He needed help to convince her they could have it all because he wasn’t about to lose her again, and there was only one way to do that.

He grabbed his phone and headed downstairs; he wasn’t leaving her place just yet. He couldn’t, not like this.

“Cameron, how hard would it be to get traded?” he asked as his agent answered.

“What? For fuck’s sake Jake, it’s nearly three in the morning and you want to know about being traded? What the hell is going on?”

“I found my girl; she’s here in Seattle and I’m not losing her this time. I walked away eight years ago but I’m not about to now.”

“Hold the hell up. You want to get traded to Seattle for a girl?”
