“Damn man, you’re so screwed,” Gary laughed again just as Stacey joined them.

“Are you two done here?” she asked.

“Just about to start, watch me take this guy down Stacey,” Gary stated.

She couldn’t help but roll her eyes as the two traded barbs in order to get people out to donate to the hospital. She had to admit it was pretty fun watching it all go down, but she wanted to make sure that they promoted the hospital over themselves. When they finished, she was glad they added that as much as they wanted to win they wanted the hospital to win the most and she nodded in approval.

“Keep her busy,” Gary told Jake checking his phone.

“Ready to get back to the ballroom and finish up the rest?” she asked them.

“I need to stop in and make sure the emcee can stay a bit longer,” Jake told her. “It shouldn’t take long.”

“Okay,” she agreed, but an hour later, she was wishing she hadn’t. “Jake what’s going on? There’s not one of these things that couldn’t have been accomplished with a phone call. Is this about those stupid comments your teammates made?”

“Which comments?”

“The ones about you not taking a girl home, what was that about anyway?”

“Honestly, I’ve been a bit reclusive when it comes to my personal life.”

“So…”

“So, don’t kill me Cee but I lied.”

“Lied about what?” she asked as her stomach twisted in knots.

“It hasn’t been a year since I’ve been with someone.”

“So, you stopped sleeping with anything with a skirt because you met someone?”

“No,” he said parking the car outside the hotel knowing the only way to keep her out of there was to tell her the truth about him.

“Okay then why?”

“There wasn’t a multitude of women in my bed, there was only ever you.”

“What? You’re saying you pretended they were me?”

“No, Cee look at me baby,” he said catching her gaze. “I haven’t slept with anyone since you.”

“I know that, Jake; it’d be kind of hard to do with you in my bed every night.”

“I meant when you left baby. The stories were just that, stories. Made up by my agent to get publicity when part of the guys started asking if I was…”

“Was what?” she asked barely breathing as she tried to figure out if he was telling the truth.

“That I was gay, don’t laugh Cee.”

“I’m sorry but there’s always been girls all over you Jake.”

“And I won’t deny that I’ve kissed and fooled around with plenty of them, but I never could sleep with them Cee. They weren’t you and the guys were suspicious. So, my agent paid off a girl to tell the tabloids that we’d been carrying on an affair. She became a D list actress and it shut down some of the questions from the guys but this past year I let even the stories die down.”

“Making them question your preferences fully again? Come on they can’t seriously think you’re…”

“They do but I can live with it because I have you again.”

“Jake, I don’t know what to say,” she admitted knowing that he was simply trying to get her to bid on him for the auction. There was no way he hadn’t slept with someone since she left. He was a guy and they had needs. He wouldn’t be satisfied relieving them himself.
