“I know Stacey, she’s not about to admit that you mean too much to her to take a chance with. She thinks you’re going back home and will just drop her.”

“That’s not going to happen. I’ve got my agent working overtime trying to get me traded out here to be with her.”

“So I’ve heard—again you’re not killing my husband. Do you love Stacey? Love her the way Miles loves me?” Emma asked looking at him pointedly.

“I haven’t slept with anyone but her for eight years Emma; I love her more than Miles loves you. She’s everything to me and even if I don’t get traded, I’m not letting her go.”

“Then you need to prove it, she needs to know that you still love her. It’s not going to be easy Jake and if you hurt her, I will tear you apart.”

“How do I prove it? What will it take to get through to her that I’m all in?”

“A lot but getting her to admit that you mean enough to her to take a chance is the first step. She’ll either bid on you to keep Angie from it or else you’ll know that it’ll take a hell of a lot more than just a bit of jealousy.”

“Great so you have no clue what she’s thinking hmm?”

“I know Stacey and she’s not going to give in unless she has to.”

“You’re sure this Angie will be here?”

“A room full of hot star athletes, yeah she’ll be here and when she sees Stacey ignoring you, she’ll come after you,” Emma said and a couple hours later, he discovered she was right.

“Wow, so you’ve been working to help the children’s hospital this entire summer?” Angie questioned letting her hand linger on his arm.

“I’ve been working with Stacey to get tonight ready. She’s a great person.”

“Ah but she’s such a buzz kill, isn’t she? She might be the type to turn down a football god but I’m not.”

“Maybe I’ll see you as the winning bidder a bit later?” he offered with a smile as he saw Stacey watching them from across the room.

“I’d love it but there are a lot of other hunks here so why should I choose you over them?”

“Because I’m the one with multiple Super Bowl rings, enough for an entire hand,” he stated, and she grinned at him.

“A real winner huh?”

“Absolutely,” he agreed as the announcer told them it was nearly time to start. “I’ve got to run, nice meeting you Angie.”

“You too Jake,” Angie said with a smile that said she wanted to eat him alive.

He made it backstage and sat down with the others to wait his turn. The room was clearing out when he saw Dan, Beau and Gary head his way as Walker took the stage.

“So, what was up with that chick out there earlier?” Dan questioned.

“Yeah, why the hell would you flirt with some ninny when you’re with Stacey?” Gary added.

“I’m not with Stacey, at least not as far as she claims.”

“Okay, can’t really say I blame the girl since you stood her up at the altar,” Beau said pointedly.

“How did you…doesn’t matter,” Jake stated shaking his head. “That girl I was flirting with is the girl who goes after all of Cee’s exes. I’m just trying to see whether or not she’s in this as much as I am.”

“By flirting with the girl that she can’t stand?” Dan inquired. “That doesn’t seem too smart to me.”

“She’ll either step up and admit she wants me, or she’ll let it go. It’s a gamble I’m willing to take because I have nothing to lose. I’m barely holding onto her as it is and at least this way I’ll know how far I have to go to get her back.”

“From the looks of it I’d say quite a bit,” Gary stated.

“What was up with all of the chicks and the stories?” Beau questioned.
