“The lucky man who married Emma, I’ve heard all about you from Stace.”

“You have?” Emma and Miles asked looking at her as Jake walked up behind them.

“Absolutely and you’re Jake, you’ve put a glow back in our girl.”

“My girl you mean,” he stated shooting a glare at the man. “Cee, what the hell is going on?”

“What?” she said then got his meaning when his gaze narrowed in on his arm around her. “Jake relax, Lucca’s a friend.”

“I’ll bet,” he nearly seethed and she knew he hadn’t believed her about not sleeping with anyone but him.

“Jake, back off.”

“Back off? Like hell I will. You’re my fiancée Cee, mine and he’s got his hands all over you.”

“I said back off Jake. This is not the time to talk about any of this.”

“I think it’s the perfect time considering you just said that from another man’s arms!”

“Oh for Pete’s sake, Lucca is a friend. Ask Emma, she knew us when he lived here.”

“I need to go check on the food vendor that just arrived,” Emma said but she stopped her.

“Oh no you don’t, come on Em. Tell him that Lucca and I were friends…study partners…”

“You were but…well we’re not sure what you and Lucca were anymore,” she countered apologetically.

“What’s going on here Stace?” Lucca asked squeezing her hip.

“Nothing except my friends not believing me when I said we were just friends.”

“Oh, right,” he said looking between the members of the group.

“Get your damned hands off my girl,” Jake said taking a step forward seeing the look that flashed over his face. “She’s mine and I’m not letting you waltz in here and mess with her.”

“Easy buddy, I think Stace and I need to talk for a moment so if you’ll excuse us,” Lucca said quickly leading them through the group stepping out of Jake’s reach and closing the door to the building ushering her towards the back office as the others inside watched them carefully.

“Okay Stace what the hell is going on?” he asked locking the door before he leaned back against the desk.

“Jake showed up as the best man for Emma and Miles’ wedding, things happened and I told him that I hadn’t slept with anyone in seven years.”

“Why?”

“Because I was sure he was going to go back to New England and football and I didn’t want to deal with him trying to make something out of the night that wasn’t there.”

“So you said you slept with someone after him because if he’d known then that he was the only one…”

“He wouldn’t back off yeah, but things didn’t go as I thought they were going to and now…”

“You’re engaged to him again?”

“Yeah and I told him I’d lied but he doesn’t believe me. He had the nerve to ask Emma who I’d slept with and when they put the time together…”

“They thought it was me?” he asked laughing lightly.

“Yeah, I didn’t tell Jake about you Lucca, as far as he knew you were just some study friend.”

“Only now after seeing us together he thinks that we were sleeping together, especially since I know we weren’tjustfriends.”
