A silence falls between us. I watch Seer shift uncomfortably in his chair, which probably means he has more revelations to make.

“I saw her there, too,” Seer says after a while. It’s funny how I immediately know to whom he is referring. Seer’s bright blue eyes search mine as if trying to gauge my reaction. “You know…the woman with the enchanting hazel eyes. At the time, I didn’t know her relevance, but I felt this odd strong connection between you two. She seemed to be in a hurry to get out of there, but then she stopped to watch you…right from the beginning to the end. Then I saw her on Snake’s computer screen. She looked completely different, but you’d never see those eye colors anywhere else.”

“Yet, she denies all memories of the den,” I say with a quiet scoff. “And Bone’s incident too. Can you believe that?”

“Do you like her?” Seer says, pinning me with a knowing gaze. It was a question, but his eyes held a firm resolution that said he knew the answer already.

I shrug casually. “She’s with the enemy,” I reply simply.

Seer’s eyes light up with amusement. “You didn’t deny it,” he says.

“She does have great tits and an even greater ass,” I reply with a smirk.

Seer laughs and shakes his head at me. “Will you keep stalking her then?” he asks after another stretch of silence.

“Yeah,” I reply with a shrug. “Until I need to do otherwise.”

Seer nods, a quiet symbol of acknowledgment and support. “I guess it’s time for me to retire to my room.” He stands from the couch, taking his book with him. “Good night, Prez.”

“Good night, Seer.”

I watch him go, suddenly realizing how unappreciative I’ve been in the past few days. These men are my family, sworn brothers that would do anything for me, including laying down their lives. But these days, I’ve been getting dragged into my past. I’m too occupied fighting my demons to count my blessings. But even though I don’t express it much, I’m glad for the constant reassurance of their presence. I raise my glass and huff a sigh when I realize it’s empty. I start to stand up to pour myself another drink when my phone vibrates in my pocket. I sigh softly and pull it out.Evanesce.

I stare at the screen, contemplating whether just to let the call go unanswered. I don’t want to admit it to myself, but it’s true that I’ve been avoiding contact with Evanesce since I received that call from Anderson. I’m not sure how to react to what she did, and I guess she hadn’t called either because she didn’t know how to broach the subject.

I let out another sigh even as I swipe to answer the call. I place the phone against my ear, but I remain silent.

“Frère.” Her voice was hesitant…apologetic. Evanesce only calls me frère after she’s done something grievous and wants to be forgiven.

“How could you…,” I let my voice trail off on another sigh. “Do you know what kind of man Anderson Grey is? Do you know the evils he’s capable of? How could you offer yourself to him? You break my heart, Coco.”

“I’m…I’m sorry, Pocus,” Evanesce says in a small voice. “I knew how distressed you’d be with the housing notice and your best sergeant being locked up. I…I was just trying to help.”

“There’s no way I’m letting you sacrifice yourself to that bastard for me, Evanesce,” I say in a firmer voice this time. “You will come nowhere near him, do you hear that?”

“Yes, Pocus,” she replies in a solemn voice. “I also know that. I was just trying to buy the club sometime. I proposed six months, but he was adamant about sealing the deal in three months.”

“What about Knix?” I ask quietly. “Does he know about all of these?”

“Yeah,” Evanesce replies with a sigh. “He was right beside me when I made the call to Anderson.”

I let out a heavy sigh. To blame Evanesce would only make me a hypocrite. She did buy me some time to put Anderson in his place. I wouldn’t have been able to think straight if I had to deal with my sergeant in prison and the possibility of losing our home while thinking of a way to get Anderson Grey off my back. Evanesce made things a lot easier, but just the thought of my little sister being remotely involved with Anderson makes my skin crawl.

“I’m…I’m sorry,” Evanesce says slowly, breaking my long silence. She must think that I’m mad at her. “Do you forgive me?”

“Of course, ma chère,” I reply with a deep sigh. “You know I can’t stay mad at you. However, I’d appreciate it if you put me in the know next time before making such important decisions. No…there shouldn’t be a next time, Nesce. I don’t want you meeting him on your own or even taking his calls. Stay away from him, alright?”

“Yes, Prez,” Evanesce says promptly. “I love you, big brother.”

My heart melts, and a smile filters onto my face. Even though thousands of miles separated us, I could feel the genuineness of her words as if she was sitting next to me.

“I love you too, Coco,” I reply. And I’ll protect you with the last of my breath.

Another unspoken promise, one I intend to keep at all costs.
