“Yep,” Graveyard replies with a small nod.

I thought Bones couldn’t care less if Abigail died. Seems like there was a soft heart behind those huge bones, after all. Graveyard walks further into the room and comes to stand by Abigail’s bed. He folds his arms across his chest and stares at her. After a few seconds, he returns his gaze to me.

“I did return Seer’s call, and he told me Mama was here to take care of her,” Graveyard says quietly and shrugs. “But I figured I’d drop by and check her vitals.”

The distance from the hospital to the clubhouse was quite a ride, so I knew he went out of his way to be here despite being so casual about it. I guess he was worried about her, too.

“Merci, mon ami,” I say quietly.

Graveyard smiles briefly at me and moves closer to Abigail. I watch on quietly as he examines her, and it takes a while for me to realize that I’m holding my breath. Again.

“She’s stable,” Graveyard says, stepping back a little. “She’ll be fine.”

I let out a breathy sigh. “Yeah…for as long as she keeps that on,” I say, gesturing at the bracelet on her left wrist. It’s made of deep blue crystal beads that are meant to retain her energy.

“Are you worried she won’t?” Graveyard asks.

“She doesn’t believe in magic and anything relating to it,” I reply, glancing at the soft angle of her face. It’s funny how she vehemently defends logic when the things that have been done to her by Anderson exceed logic. She looks so peaceful in sleep…my little tigress.

Where did that come from?

“How ironic,” Graveyard says solemnly. “She’s surrounded by magic.”

“My thoughts exactly,” I reply with a small smile.

“I’d prescribe pills, but they’d be useless against this,” Graveyard says, folding his stethoscope into his coat’s pocket. “You have to make her keep the bracelet on, anyway.”

“I plan on that,” I reply with a determined nod. She’s stubborn, but I can be ruthless in getting my way. There’s no way she’s dying on my watch…even if it means that I have to tie her up to keep the bracelet on her. I hope it doesn’t have to come to that, though.

“I need to go now,” Graveyard says, glancing down at his watch. “I have a consultation with a patient at the hospital in twenty minutes.”

“See you around, man,” I say, waving him off.

After Graveyard exits the room, I lean forward a little to study her face. She looks spirited even in her sleep. I reach to trail a finger along her forehead, moving the stray strands of her shiny brown hair away from her face. My eyes fall on her slightly parted lips, and I swallow hard at the wave of lust that instantly hits me. I wonder what it’d be like to run my tongue along the lush outline of her sexy pink lips and dive into the heat of her mouth.

She stirs in her sleep, almost as if she could feel the intensity of my stare. Her eyelids flutter open, and those magical orbs stare at me in momentary bewilderment.

She does have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.

“How do you feel?” I ask quietly, keeping my eyes on hers.

She swipes her tongue quickly over her upper lip, and the innocent gesture hits me with a new wave of longing.Fuck!

“I feel like I was dragged to hell and back,” Abigail says. Her voice is a little scratchy, but she looks well otherwise. Her face has regained most of its color, too. “Wh…what happened? I can’t seem to recall the last few hours.”

“You passed out because your body couldn’t bear the poison of the hex in you,” I explain, quietly studying her face.

“Right,” Abigail says with a dry snort. “The hex.”

She still doesn’t believe me. She sits up in bed and runs a hand through her hair to comb the stray strands away from her face. She notices the crystal bracelet around her wrist and narrows her eyes at it.

“What’s this?” she asks, holding out her hand to me with a slightly confused frown.

“It’s the protective charm that Mama put on you,” I reply coolly. “It’ll help block the spell’s effect until we find a way to lift the hex permanently. You can’t ever take that off.”

Her frown deepens. “What if I do?”

She wasn’t trying to be antagonistic as usual. I can tell that she’s genuinely curious. “The poison in your soul will spread, and you’ll die.”
