“I guess Knix brought back a lot to think about,” I say to Pocus. “Do you think we’ll have an all-out war?”

Pocus shakes his head. “That’d only create a mess. Rugal is not a worthy opponent.”

I agree with Pocus. Rugal is the president of a rival motorcycle club, a long-time enemy who’s never dared to cross paths with the Ruthless Kings before. If he’s truly behind these recent happenings, it’s most likely because he has strong backing, someone making moves through him–the true player.

“How do you plan to deal with this?”

Pocus pins me with a meaningful look. “You are going to play a vital role.”

“Moi?”

“Oui, mon ami,” he replies with a decisive nod. “I have sent Hex to investigate the location Knix got. All we need are some well-taken photographs to set the cops on their tails. Rugal is too dumb to take care of all the loose ends, anyway. I’m sure he left enough of a trail for the authorities to follow. We have to set them on the right path.”

“What do I have to do?” I ask solemnly, taking another puff of the cigarette dangling between my fingers.

“You go as a backup,” Pocus replies, staring directly down into my eyes as if trying to carve his instructions into my soul. “Your task, my friend, is to get Hex in and out of there without any issues. You’re a fast rider that can kill on the move if necessary. The man’s fate lies with you.”

“I’ll bring him back home.” I turn my head to the side to study his face. “And you?”

“I’ll grant Anderson an audience,” Pocus says and pours himself a drink from the half-empty scotch bottle on the table.

“Why now?” I ask. “It’s been two years.”

Pocus scoffs, as if amused by a joke. “If he’s behind all of this, I guess he needs my attention real bad.”

“And you’re just going to indulge him?” I ask, unable to wrap my head around how Pocus could ever want to get himself involved with Anderson Grey again.

“I plan to use him,” Pocus replies simply, downing the contents of his scotch glass.

Although I have no idea what’s going on in his head, I don’t need him to elaborate if he doesn’t feel the need to. I’ve worked with Pocus for years, and I know for sure that he always puts the interest of the MC first in any decision he makes. That’s part of what makes him a damn good leader.

I pour some of the scotch for myself and lift it to my lips when I feel the familiar pull behind my eyes, accompanied by a splitting pain in my skull. My hand shakes, and I bite down on my lower lip to muffle the wince that rises in my throat. I lift the glass to my mouth and down the shot with a calmness that disguises my growing anxiety.

“You alright?” Pocus asks, his eyes boring intensely into mine. But, of course, he’d been watching me the whole time.

“Yeah,” I reply with a casual shrug.

Pocus looks at me for a long, tense moment and leans back in his seat with a soft sigh. “All right.”

I raise the short cigarette dangling between my fingers to my lips and take a long shaky drag, ignoring the excruciating ache in my temples.

This will pass… Will it be soon enough?

CHAPTERTWO

Iwatch a black BMW roll down the old dirt road to the warehouse in the distance. I glance down at my watch and turn to face Seer.

“We’re right on time,” I hiss. “I think they’re here.”

“You’re right,” Seer says, keeping his gaze on the scene unfolding in the distance. We watch Rugal exit the warehouse with two hefty men behind him. He waits for the man in the BMW to step out, a wiry man in a dark suit with rich blonde hair. He has two men with him who look like bodyguards. They seem to exchange pleasantries before heading back into the warehouse together.

“It’s time,” I say, taking my camera out of its case. I turn the camera on and insert the memory card that Snake gave me before we left the clubhouse. I take a few pictures of the environment, adjusting the camera settings to match.

“You should turn off the shutter sound,” Seer says quietly from beside me. “You don’t want to give yourself away with that.”

I glance at him, wondering absentmindedly why he seems so withdrawn. “I know that.”

“Don’t get too close,” Seer says, echoing Prez’s instructions. “Just go close enough to take a few incriminating shots. I’ll be right here.”
