My phone rings. I lurch at the table to grab it. I glance down at the screen, feeling my stomach plummet at the sight of the unknown caller ID. I sigh my disappointment, tapping the screen to pick up the call.

I place the phone over my ear. “Hello?”

“Dear brother.”

It feels like someone has suddenly knocked the air out of me. I stand still in shock as my brain tries to process the voice that’d just spoken to me.

“Edward?”

Pocus freezes in the act of lighting a cigarette, his face instantly hardening into a murderous scowl.

“You recognize me,” Edward says in a lightly amused tone. “I’m impressed. I guess there’s still some bond left between us after all.

“What the fuck do you want?”

“Funny question, brother,” Edward says with a dry snort. “I do want a lot from you. And I will take all that I want. On that note… I have your woman.”

My legs buckled beneath me, and I blindly grab onto the table to steady myself. “Wh… what?”

“Pretty little thing she is,” he scoffs. “Quite feisty too. I’ll have so much fun with her.”

And the line goes dead.

Ilook around the room that Edward has me locked in. It’s a tiny room with stark white walls and no windows. Apart from the tiny iron bed on which I’m currently seated and a brownish-white sink, there’s nothing in the room. There’s barely any space to move around and definitely no opportunity for escape.

I don’t know where I am or how long I’ve been here. The last thing I remember, Edward jabbed a syringe in my neck before driving away from the airport. I drop my head into my hands and let out a stifled sob. I’m more than scared–I’m terrified. From the little I know about him, Edward Abner is terrifically evil, and I’m completely at his mercy. I have no idea how long he plans to keep me here or what he intends to do with me. I try to think of Nicholas, looking for strength in the memories we shared, but my heart only wrenches harder with agony.

No one will ever find me. Nicholas will never know what happened to me. Oh, my god. Oh, my GOD.

I try to breathe, to stop the racing thoughts. They’re not true. If Edward has me, it’s for a reason.

I wonder if Nicholas knows something is wrong. And if he does, I wonder how he’s doing. Not good, I suppose. All of this is probably a plot to get to Seer. I raise my head and dab angrily at my tears. I can’t break down if I’m going to help the man I love. I have to be strong. For Seer. For us.

I hear a sound at the door, and I sit up straighter on the bed, my hands fisted tightly beside me.

Edward walks into the room, holding a food tray in his hands. “You’re awake, mademoiselle.” He walks toward the bed and places the food tray beside me, smiling amusedly into my eyes. “I thought you’d need some food. You slept like a log.”

I hate the fact that he looks so much like Seer. I glare directly into his eyes with as much venom as I can muster. “What do you want from me?”

“From you?” Edward snorts. “Maybe I do want something from you.”

I shake my head at him. “You’re crazy if you think Seer would be stupid enough to come here just for me.”

“Oh, he will,” Edward says with a certainty that makes my guts twist with dread. “I’ll call, and he’ll come running like a lamb to the slaughter,” he continues in an even tone, holding my glare with an infuriating expression. “He’ll come running like the dog he’s always been. He was stupid enough to fall in love, and now I have full control over him. I’ll make that coward watch what I do to you, and then I’ll kill him.”

“Nicholas is more of a man than you’ll ever be,” I say through gritted teeth. “You’re the bigger coward!”

“Funny your mother was of the same opinion,” he says mildly. “Although, it turned out really badly for her in the end.”

“What do you know about my mother?”

“Rosalinda?” He scoffs. “A lot, actually. I know she was a greedy bitch who wanted way more than she deserved. An unapologetic opportunist, I would say,” he shrugs casually. “She got what she deserved.”

“Wh… what does that mean?” I swallow nervously, and for the first time, it really dawned on me that I’m being held captive by a deluded psychopath. “What did you do to my mother?”

“Rosalinda brought about her own misfortunes,” Edward replies. “She thought she was all that. She should have just gone her way after doing her job, but she had to poke her nose into other people’s business,” he pauses. “You look like you need to hear the whole story. Well, we’ve got plenty of time to wile away, so I’ll amuse you. But for that, I’ll have to sit.”
