“I’m special.”

“If it sounds too good to be true, then that’s because it usually is,” I retorted, not appreciating his mockery as I folded my arms across my chest.

We’d only traveled into West Orange to get gas for his bike, so before this could derail further, I needed to make sure he was okay with this.

I needed to understand his motivations.

It had made sense when we were sitting in that tiny gatehouse, his hand tight around my fingers, his gaze and mine colliding in a way that made me feel like he could see into my very soul.

But throw in a dash of fresh air and I was starting to wonder if he’d been smoking pot—which was something I also needed to know—before we embarked on an epic road trip that’d span the country.

“I’ve never sounded too good to be true in my life,” Digger murmured. “I think I like it.”

“You’ve always been trouble?”

“Yes.” He arched a brow at me. “Ever heard of that little thing called divorce?”

“I have, but it doesn’t happen a lot in my world,” I said dryly. “I mean, why would it? We’re Catholic.”

“Are you?” He turned his focus on me.

I knew what he meant. Was I devout or did I go through the motions?

“I’m not devout.”

“Well, then, what’s the problem?”

I wriggled my shoulders. “I don’t think you understand the situation.” I let the fear get to me, and it would be irresponsible if I didn’t spell it out. “My father’s a dangerous man, Digger.”

As I stepped closer to him, his head tilted to the side. “Let me get this straight. You’re trying to protect me from your father?”

“Yes. He’s scary.” I shivered. “He’s a bad man.”

“I’m sure he is. I’m not exactly Tinkerbell, Mary Catherine. You’re getting out of one dicey situation and diving headfirst into another.” I flinched at that. “I’m not going to lie to you. I’m telling you that you won’t get hurt. This is like a knife to the heart rather than a GSW to the gut. You get me?”

My brow puckered. “Not exactly.”

He grunted. “You started something when you left campus. The minute those guards of yours registered that you weren’t where you were supposed to be, the minute they stirred their panic mode into motion, you changed the course of your life.

“Whether or not your father knows about your connection with Sin is another matter entirely. But, as it stands, you’ve got a good chunk of the Five Points out on the hunt for you. It’s only a matter of time before they ask your mom where they think you might be—”

“As if she’d know,” I grumbled.

“Doesn’t matter. They could ask her. They know that she’s got a kid with the Sinners. It takes a phone call to find out the truth. And if no one answers the phone, then a visit—”

“That’s why you didn’t want anyone to see me,” I rasped. My arms were folded across my chest, and I began rubbing my hands up and down my biceps, trying not to feel nervous and failing.

“Partly,” he confirmed. “The second someone saw you, shit would have changed.”

“Why?”

“Rex is our Prez. I love him like a brother, but I’m not that close to him. Not like I am Sin and Storm, the VP. And while Storm would help you in an instant because he’s a sucker for damsels in distress, he’s currently wired out of his skull on coke.” He ground his teeth, but I didn’t think it was from annoyance with me, but at Storm. “So, with that in mind, both Sin and Storm are AWOL, and they won’t be able to help you.

“If we’ve got Five Pointers about to beat a path into West Orange to find you, then what do you think is going to happen?”

“Rex will hand me over to allay a war.”

“Exactly.”
