“That’s dedication.”

“Only what she deserves.”

MaryCat grumbled, “Why do guys always think their bikes and cars are girls?”

“Because they don’t wanna ride other dudes,” I joked. “Unless they’re that way inclined, of course.”

She stared at me, and her cheeks turned a delicious pink. It was so obvious against her creamy skin, even more so because of her pallor. “And you’re not that way inclined?”

I had to smile.

If I’d wanted proof that she was inexperienced with guys, then I just got it.

I hadn’t been a creep, but checking her out was a little too easy… If she hadn’t noticed, then she was definitely not used to the signs that a guy was into her.

“I’m not. Straighter than an arrow.”

“An arrow’s trajectory can curve.”

I hummed. “Well, my trajectory is straight ahead.” Just like she was in my line of sight. Her lips twitched, so I reminded her, “Twenty minutes and I’ll be in to check that everything is okay.”

“Are you always this…” She paused. Something surged into being in her eyes, those fucking eyes a bastard like me had no business drowning in. “…protective?”

I shrugged. “Isn’t that how a man should behave with a woman at his side?”

“Not in my experience,” was her sad response. She patted my hand. “See you in twenty.”

I watched her go, her wooden steps making me cringe, and then I headed into the guys’ restroom to take care of my own needs.

Upon my return to the counter, I ordered two coffees and requested the menu.

The waitress batted her lashes at me, and having seen MaryCat just do that, even mockingly, I’d admit that this woman, who was my type, did jackshit for my dick. Unlike MaryCat, who would be my wife soon enough and had my cock reacting like I’d downed a few Viagra.

An interesting and totally unexpected development.

As the server set out some mugs on the counter, I didn’t bother talking to her even though I was under no obligation not to flirt. I just smiled politely while I kept my focus on the bathroom door.

A couple minutes later, a hand touched my shoulder.

Twisting around, I saw the server was smiling at me. “My shift ends in thirty minutes. I know a great bar—”

“I’m just traveling through.” I gave her another polite smile. “With my fiancée.”

She blinked. “Oh. That’s a real shame. I could have shown you a great time—”

The restroom door opened, and I shifted ass over to it when I saw MaryCat.

Her color was better, and the tiny baby hairs around her face were damp so I knew she’d washed up.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. Who knew it took so many muscles to squat?”

Surprised she was so candid, I laughed. “Better thigh workout than a cross-ski machine.”

“Don’t sound so proud,” she groused. “God, I need coffee. Like a quart of it.”

“You’ll have to squat again,” I pointed out.
