Thenhestartled me.

He flopped onto the bed, twisting us around in some ninja magic so that, suddenly, I was on the bottom and he was very much on top of me.

God, he wassoheavy. Such a solid presence, a grounding one. Fuck, I hadn’t known that would feel so good.

He loomed over me, his massive shoulders taking up my whole line of sight as he studied my expression. “You know what’s coming, don’t you?”

“Better than you do, probably. Uncle Aidan will get involved.”

His hand cupped my cheek, those inked fingers so gentle as they stroked along the curve of my jaw. “Are you scared?”

I was only capable of focusing on the tenderness of his caress.

Did he know what that did to someone chronically starved of affection like me?

“No,” I croaked out the truth.

It was illogical that I had been before, but now that the shithadhit the fan, I wasn’t.

I had no idea why but the butterflies inside me had nothing to do with anxiety and everything to do with him. His touch. His proximity.

“Why not?”

Knowing he wouldn’t give up until I answered, I stumbled around for something that would satisfy him. “Because I’m your wife.” When he just blinked, I clarified, “I’ll tell Uncle Aidan that I consented to marry you. That we can’t get the marriage annulled. That’ll stop him.”

He shook his head. “Don’t be naive, Mary Catherine.”

Annoyance whipped through me. “MaryCat,” I corrected. “You said the Sinners would defend me if I was yours.”

“And they will. I’m not saying they won’t. I’m saying that when we get back, there could be a war.” His gentle brown eyes darted over my face. “Men die in wars.”

Now, fear flushed through me. “I won’t let that happen.”

“You won’t be involved. Hell, you should probably stay here. I can go alone—”

“No!”

“I’ll take you to Sin’s house, then. You can lie low there.”

That begged the question of why he hadn’t suggestedthatin the first place.

But, I didn’t let that trip from my lips, not when I knew he had his reasons for enjoying robbing Bill Murphy of the chance to wed me.

Instead, I murmured, “They’ll want to see me. Hiding me away in Vegas or in my brother’s house won’t be good enough for them. If anything, thatwill be what triggers the war.”

“I’m not putting you in their line of fire.”

I swallowed. “If you don’t, then you’ll get hurt. I won’t let that happen either. Don’t act as if you’re expendable, Digger.”

“I’m a felon, MaryCat. My brothers would mourn me but no one else gives a—”

Wrath burned my fear into ashes. “My father took my choices away, Digger. Donotbe like him.” His eyes widened in surprise, but I wasn’t done. “Iwould care. I would mourn you.

“You think I’d be okay with letting you get hurt when you’re only involved in this because I burst into your life? You think I’m that self-centered that I wouldn’t be a part of this?” I sucked in a breath. “You might think I’m a pampered princess, and sure, that’s fair. When I wasn’t being imprisoned in my room, I was spoiled.

“But if you try to leave me at Sin’s home, I’ll find my way to Queens and I’ll make Uncle Aidan listen to—”

His lips were on mine before I could finish that sentence.
