“Because your ring on my finger protects me. I’m a married woman. You took my virginity. In their eyes, I’m spoiled goods.”

“What kind of piece of shit thinks that?”

“I told you, we all play a role in this life.” I swallowed, wishing we could get back to the good stuff, but this was too important. Digger, if I didn’t stop him, would martyr himself unnecessarily. “But that’s the point. You saved me from that and you’ve given me a voice, one I didn’t have before.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I’d never have been able to speak with Uncle Aidan. Now, he’ll demand to talk to me.”

“Why not? If you’re family?”

I chuckled. “Don’t be naive. What would the head of the Irish mob speak to a college student about? A college student who happens to be the daughter of a Pointer who isn’t as high up in the ranks as he should be.”

“Why isn’t he?”

“He gets demoted a lot. His temper makes him rash and he makes mistakes, so he ends up in jail.”

His jaw worked. “The idea of him hurting you, MaryCat, pisses me off.”

I leaned forward, cupped his chin, then pressed a kiss to it in silent thanks.

“You think if you talk to O’Donnelly, you can stop things from escalating?”

“I do.” I sucked in a breath. “Uncle Aidan is unusual.”

“He’s fucking insane is what he is.Unusual,” he muttered disparagingly.

“Do you know that you can lose fingers if he catches you in a lie?”

“What!?”

“I’m telling you—he’s Old Testament, Digger. I-I just can’t believe that if he knew what was happening, he’d be okay with it. His sons are too good for that anyway.”

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly what I said—they’re good men.”

“They’re mobsters,” he dismissed.

“You’re a biker, yet you’re the only guy who has ever held me with kindness, who’s cherished me, who’s made me feel like more than just a commodity,” I said simply. “Some things don’t have to make sense to be true.”

His eyes narrowed on me, and though I saw his confusion at my statement, a confusion that was formed in him accepting that I was telling the truth, he decided to focus on the unimportant stuff.

Men.

“You’re close to his sons?” he demanded.

I hitched a shoulder. “No. Or I’d have gone to them. Whenever I see them at events, they’re always kind to me. And the women talk—”

“Don’t I know it,” he groused.

My lips twitched. “I need to revisit this conversation because you’re stubborn. I’d much prefer to have your dick inside me again.”

He smirked at me. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

The smirk faded and was replaced with a somber look. “We’ll do this on your terms.”
