Patience…

I finish the chocolate dessert, imagining the day I’ll lick it from her naked body. How she’ll moan and writhe, that sweet voice of hers echoing in pleasure, until she finally admits the need she’s been fighting.

How I’ll own her, completely. What a victory that will be.

Sweeter than any check Nero Barretti could write, that’s for sure. I thought I was stealing his favorite plaything away from him, but it turns out, I won something far more valuable in that poker game.

A prize even he hasn’t tasted just yet.

Him, or anyone else. Because I’d wager my considerable fortune on the fact that sweet Avery is still a virgin, and an untrained one, at that. She tries to act confident, but her youth betrays her. The way she responds to my touch, the flash of confusion and resentment in her eyes when I explored her mouth, a stranger to the new sensations her body produced…

She’s an innocent, through and through.

For now.

But soon, I’ll strip that from her, and show her the pleasure of pure corruption.

Soon, I’ll claim her as my own.

And not just as a fuck-you to Nero Barretti, either, although that will be a fine benefit, too. No, now I’ve glimpsed the passion that lies beneath her prim surface, simmering in those big blue eyes of hers, I’ll take it as a personal challenge. I’m going to be the one to unleash the sensual goddess she has locked away inside. I can’t wait to make that gorgeous voice of hers scream my name.

And I’ll take my time, too. The best pleasures in life are to be savored. After all, anticipation is half the reward. Once I’ve conquered her, I know, I’ll be moving on, looking for my next challenge. But for now? I have a whole month to enjoy Miss Carmichael’s charms…

And I’ll relish every moment.

I leave the kitchen, and head upstairs to my suite. The financial markets are opening in Asia, so I check a few stock prices before I see a new email come through. It’s from the investigator I hired to check Avery out.

Good. Nobody gets near me for any reason without a full background check, and this girl is no exception. I’ve had competitors try to send women to seduce me, planning to pick up corporate secrets from pillow talk. They never succeed. Sure, I fuck them, why wouldn’t I, when they’re offering themselves up on a platter—and collecting a pretty penny for it too, I’m sure.

But my secrets stay buried, no matter who is sharing my bed.

Opening it up, I scan the information. Mother: Absent. Father: Deceased. A family farm… debt to the Barrettis…

It all checks out.

I’m pleased. She’s clearly lived a sheltered life, a world away from the high-stakes battles and betrayals that litter my own history. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find her naiveite tempting, a refreshing change from the jaded women that usually move in my circles—out to secure their next rich husband, or to distract them from the last one.

No, Avery is untouched by that greed and cynicism. I can tell from the way she toured the house, wide-eyed, uncomfortable in her new designer heels. But still…

There’s something she’s hiding from me.

It’s instinct, some unconscious alert in the back of my brain. And I know better than to ignore it. Maybe it’s something innocent, or maybe I’m so used to lies and deception that I assume everyone in the world must be harboring an ulterior motive.

But either way, I won’t let my guard slip, not for an instant—and certainly not for some wide-eyed girl, straight off the farm.

After all, this is my empire. It doesn’t matter what she might be planning, I’ll take what I want from her, the way I always do.

I’m the one in control here.

And I always will be.

I don’t sleep long,I never do. At four, I’m awake again to check the markets, and fire off emails to my team at Wolfe Capital. They’re all awake too, if they know what’s good for them. I demand total dedication from my team—and pay them handsomely for it.

After all, where else could they get a starting salary of half a million dollars—plus bonuses?

I learned a long time ago, the only way to get true loyalty is to buy it. With wealth—and fear.

And I’m generous with both of them.
