AVERY

Sebastian wants something,I can tell from the determined glint in his eyes. I’m learning to read his signals now, and everything about him is on edge, like he has something to prove.

Whatever it is, I can take it.

I hope he liked the show, back at the house. Of course I knew he was home, I was waiting in the living room, until I heard his footsteps, and started my performance for him.

He likes his Little Sparrow blushing and innocent?

I can play that game as long as it takes. Wearing whatever costume he likes.

I quickly select a little black dress to wear for him tonight, figuring that I can’t go wrong with that. I bought a few pricey pieces of jewelry when I went shopping a few days ago, and I’m wearing diamond earrings, too. Strappy black heels complete the look, and I pin the flowing waves of my hair back off my neck.

When I come back down the stairs, Sebastian is already waiting for me. His eyes start at my feet as I’m coming down the stairs and work their way up. The intensity of his stare is almost like a physical caress, and I feel a shiver slide down my spine.

Yes, he’s on a mission tonight.

Just like me.

“The driver’s outside. Let’s go.” He opens the front door for me.

“Where are we going?”

He doesn’t reply. Of course not. But I don’t argue. I sit silently beside him in the car as the driver whisks us through the lights of London, until we arrive in a neighborhood full of huge stucco mansions. The car pulls through a pair of gates, and up a driveway to the house.

I can hear music as we get out of the car, a thumping bass that ripples through the night.

Sebastian leads me into the party, and I’m immediately overwhelmed by all the people and the volume of the music. Everyone looks young and glamorous, wearing glittering designer outfits. There are people dancing in every room, food and liquor flowing… a real wild party. We’ve barely made it five feet through the door before I spot a man doing a line of coke off the swell of a woman’s huge breasts in her low-cut dress. I recoil, moving closer to Sebastian.

He gives me a long look. “What’s wrong, Sparrow? Worried you might see something you’ll enjoy?”

Before I can reply, a man strolls towards us down the hallway. He’s tall and dark-haired, wearing all black and three-day stubble on his smirking, handsome face. He slows as he approaches us, looking me over with clear appraisal.

“Wolfe,” the man greets Sebastian with a smile. He’s English too, with a cut-glass accent that makes me think of aristocracy. “Gracing us with your presence, what an honor.”

“Saint.” Sebastian chuckles. “I like to show you all what you’re missing, from time to time.”

“Arrogant tosser,” the man says good-naturedly. Then the men hug, slapping each other on the back in a friendly, familiar gesture.

I blink, shocked at Sebastian’s easy banter and genuine show of warmth.

The big, bad wolf has real friends? Named… Saint?

Saint’s gaze drifts over to me. “And who is this charming lady?”

“Avery,” he replies.

“Charmed.” Saint takes the hand I offer and brings it to his lips in a playful kiss.

“Did you say your name was Saint?” I repeat, not sure if I heard that right.

“Anthony St. Clair, at your service, but I go by Saint. That’s the name the women scream in bed, at least,” Saint says with a wink. “You can ask Seb all about that.”

I look at Seb curiously.

“We went to university together.” His words don’t really explain anything, and the pair of them share a look that speaks volumes. There’s something I’m missing here.

Sebastian looks between us and gives a cryptic smile. “I’ll go get us some drinks,” he says, and then disappears into the crowd.
