Like there’s sex in the air.

I climb the grand staircase to get away from the crowd and find a bathroom. But I’m just finishing up, when I hear two women enter the boudoir area, just outside.

“I don’t know who she is,” one of the women is saying. “But it hardly matters. She’s obviously just the flavor of the month.”

“Yeah, and I don’t know why he’s parading her around anyway,” the other woman adds. She has an American accent. “She’s not Wolfe’s usual type.”

Sebastian. They’re talking about me.

“Seems timid to me. I doubt she’s giving a man like him what he needs in the bedroom.”

“You know men like Seb, they’re all about conquest. That whole virginal thing.”

“Right,” they giggle. “He’ll be bored with her in a month.”

“Try a week!”

“Or the instant his dick gets wet.”

Their voices fade, and I exit the bathroom, feeling a curious stab of disappointment. I should be happy, I’m clearly selling my sweet and innocent act, but if they’re right… If Sebastian loses interest with me the minute I have sex with him…

Then I’ll be in trouble.

I drift back out, but I’m not ready to rejoin the party just yet. Instead, I find an open mezzanine area, a balcony overlooking the great room below. From up here, I can watch the pulse and writhe of the bodies dancing beneath me. I feel like I’m getting a glimpse at a completely different world. These people are wealthy and reckless, the kind that admire a man like Sebastian, uncaring of the fact that he’s a monster that crushes people just for fun.

Who doesn’t think twice before taking anything he wants.

I shiver again, although with desire or fear, I’m not sure. I’ve never felt more out of place—or in over my head. How am I supposed to keep a grip on my mission with Sebastian, when everything is so new to me?

I thought I knew exactly what I was getting myself in for with this mission. But every day with Sebastian, I’m shown something new. Unexpected.

Tempting.

I hear someone approach behind me, and I startle, whirling.

“Easy, Sparrow.” It’s Sebastian, but I already knew that. The man could walk into a pitch-black room, and I would still know it’s him from the arrogance in his bearing, and that all knowing, all-powerful look in his eyes.

“Enjoying the party?”

“No.” I reply. “I wouldn’t have figured it for your scene.”

He arches an eyebrow. “Why not?”

“Look around,” I say, nodding to the mindless debauchery below. “It’s all just… Shallow, and reckless. You would never lose your inhibitions like that.”

Sebastian smiles at me, slow and deadly. “You’re right. I couldn’t give a damn about the place.”

“So why did we come?” I ask.

“For you.”

He moves closer, until I’m pinned between him and the wrought iron balcony. Then he turns my body so I’m facing the party again, his breath hot on the back of my neck. “We came here tonight for your next lesson, my sweet.”

I shiver, his arms encircling me, so I’m pressed back against his chest. He casually moves my hair aside and presses a hot kiss to the side of my neck. “Look at them,” he orders me softly. “What do you see?”

“People who have too much money, who’ve never faced a single moment of consequence in their lives,” I reply, unable to keep the sharpness from my tone.

Sebastian chuckles in amusement. “Look closer.”
