“I’m sorry,” I say without thinking. But of course, after working together so long, Sebastian would feel betrayed by her apparent crimes.

He sighs. “I don’t know what accounts she’s been stealing from, and if it’s the Foundation…”

“What foundation?” I ask.

“I have a charity arm,” he says absently. “Projects all over the world, focused on women’s education and reproductive rights. It was one of my father’s passions. It’s an organizational mess, to be honest. Becca could have used the disarray to siphon funds, from the people who need them most.”

Charity work? I feel a strange stab of guilt. It’s the first I’m hearing about it. Which means I also know there’ll be no money missing from those accounts – but I can’t tell Sebastian that.

Besides, I want him distracted and overworked.

Don’t I?

“I’ll let you get back to work.” I’m just about to get up and leave him when I glance at the spread of papers littering his desk.

A brown manila envelope is peeking out of a stack of papers, with what looks like my name scrawled in black marker on the front.

I freeze.

This one is like the first delivery: sized for photographs.Do not bend.

Oh god.

“What’s this?” I ask, trying my best to sound calm as I pull it out of the stack. The envelope is still sealed shut, but that’s no relief, when it was sitting right here for Sebastian to see.

“No idea, it was here when I got home,” he replies.

Phew.

“Oh, I know!” I blurt, bouncing up. “It’ll be the designs, for a dress I’m having made. I found this amazing designer, she’s just out of fashion school, and I thought it would be fun to have something custom and one-of-a-kind.”

My heart is pounding so loudly, I’m sure it’ll give me away, but luckily, Sebastian’s cellphone rings, distracting him.

He glances at the screen. “I need to take this.”

“Of course,” I blurt, backing towards the door. “Take your time!”

I hurry out of the room and up the stairs, clutching the envelope. It’s not until the door is safely shut behind me, that I catch my breath, opening the seal.

It’s more surveillance pictures.

Someone is still following me.

I suck in a breath, flipping through the black-and-white photographs. They’re the same as last time—taken through a long-range lens, grainy but unmistakable. There I am on the sidewalk outside the library, talking to James. Leaving the house here. Strolling in the park.

I flip through them all, scared I’m going to find shots of me from today with Charlie at the Met HQ, but luckily, there’s no sign of anything so incriminating.

Yet…

I reach the end of the photos and find another note. There are just three short words scrawled on the paper, but they make my blood run cold.

It’s not over.

AVERY

I’mglad that Sebastian is so tired from working late, because I eat dinner alone, and then mouth a quick ‘Goodnight’ to him through the office door before disappearing off to bed.
